What you’ll learn

When someone apologizes, 没事 and 没关系 can both mean ‘no problem’, but the person who caused the loss should not use 没事 to excuse themselves.; Tone changes the message: 没事没事 sounds warm and reassuring, while 我都说没事了 can signal impatience or a wish to stop talking.; 我没事 can mean ‘I’m fine’ or ‘I don’t want to talk’; 今天没事 means ‘I’m free today’. Being free still does not mean you must accept an invitation.

Xiao Yue, I was twenty minutes late today, and the two words you said only made me more nervous.

I said méi shì, right?

Yeah. But then you looked down and started tidying the table. I couldn't tell whether you were really fine or very much not fine.

Haha, so you've already discovered that méi shì doesn't have just one meaning.

Leo

I have to figure out these two characters today, or I won't be able to sleep tonight.

Then let me tell you first: I really wasn't angry just now.

Leo

That's a relief. A car broke down on the road and everyone got stuck behind it.

You messaged me in advance, and we hadn't started recording yet. It really wasn't a problem.

Leo

Wait. Are méi shì and méi guānxi the same?

Sometimes they're very close, especially when someone apologizes to you.

Leo

For example, if I say, "Sorry I'm late."

I can answer méi shì or méi guānxi.

Leo

Which one sounds more natural?

Both do. Méi guānxi is clearer; méi shì is more conversational and relaxed.

Leo

Then if I break a cup in your shop, can you still say méi shì?

If it's just an ordinary cup and you didn't do it on purpose, I might say méi shì.

Leo

What if it's your favorite cup?

Then I might mourn it for three seconds before saying, "At least nobody got hurt."

Leo

So you might not say méi shì right away.

Right. When the loss is bigger, saying méi shì too quickly can actually sound insincere.

Leo

What if I break the cup and then say méi shì myself?

That wouldn't be very appropriate, because you aren't the person who suffered the loss.

Leo

I can't decide for you whether it's a big deal.

Exactly. Apologize first, then ask how to make it right.

Leo

For example, "I'm sorry. Let me replace it."

Good. Then I can decide whether to accept.

Leo

So méi shì isn't a free pass that people give themselves after making a mistake.

That's a very accurate summary.

Leo

I've noticed that Chinese people often repeat méi shì.

Right. Méi shì, méi shì sounds warmer and more reassuring.

Leo

Last time I accidentally bumped into someone's bag, he immediately said, "Méi shì, méi shì."

That means it was a tiny thing and you shouldn't worry about it.

Leo

What if he says "méi shì" in a low voice?

He might genuinely be fine and just not talk much.

Leo

Or he might be a little unhappy?

That's possible too, so you can't look at the two words alone.

Leo

What else should I look at?

The tone, the expression, and what the person does next.

Leo

Can you act it out for me?

First version: "Méi shì, méi shì. Go ahead."

Leo

That sounds relaxed. They probably really are fine.

Second version: "Méi shì."

Leo

You suddenly stopped smiling. Now I want to apologize again immediately.

See? The same words can feel completely different.

Leo

What's the third version?

"I already told you, méi shì."

Leo

Something is definitely wrong there.

At the very least, it means they don't want to keep talking, or they're getting impatient.

Leo

Impatient means they don't want to wait or listen anymore.

Right. That's a common word, and you explained it well.

Leo

What if I can't hear the difference in their tone?

You can check one more time, but don't ask ten times in a row.

Leo

How can I check naturally?

You can say, "Are you sure it's okay? Is there anything I can do?"

Leo

That gives them a chance to say what they really think.

Right. If they still say no, respect their answer for now.

Leo

I shouldn't keep guessing whether they're testing me.

Exactly. Communication isn't an exam. The other person also has a responsibility to state what they need.

Leo

That makes me feel much better.

But if they're clearly hurt, don't rely on one méi shì.

Leo

Like when someone falls down but says they're fine.

You should still check whether they can stand up and whether they need a hospital.

British people say "I'm fine" too, even when they look anything but fine.

Méi shì is also often used to mean "I'm fine, don't worry."

Leo

So if someone asks, "What's wrong?" I can say méi shì.

Yes, but it might mean "I'm fine," or it might mean "I don't want to talk about it."

Leo

So once again, I have to judge by the tone.

Right, and by your relationship.

Leo

If it's an ordinary coworker, saying méi shì might mean I don't want to discuss something private.

Exactly. The other person probably shouldn't keep pressing.

Leo

What if it's a close friend?

You can gently ask, "Are you sure? I'm here whenever you want to talk."

Leo

That doesn't force them to answer right away.

Right. Sometimes staying with someone matters more than finding out the reason.

My sister Sophie says méi shì every time she's upset.

How do you usually respond?

Leo

I say, "Something is obviously wrong. Tell me."

That sounds like a police interview.

Leo

No wonder she always says, "Leave me alone."

Next time, try: "It's okay if you don't want to talk now. Come find me if you want to talk later."

Leo

That gives her space without abandoning her.

Exactly. That's a more comfortable kind of concern.

Leo

Then can I say I'm fine when I'm in a bad mood too?

Of course. You have the right to decide when to talk and whom to tell.

Leo

But if I always say méi shì, won't people think I truly don't need help?

They might. So if you need help, it's better to be a little clearer.

Leo

For example, "I'm feeling a bit low, but I don't want to explain why yet."

Good. Or, "I want some time alone. Let's talk later."

Leo

That gives a little more information than just méi shì.

And it makes it easier for others to know how to support you.

Leo

I've also heard méi shì de, with an extra de at the end.

Méi shì de is usually used to reassure someone. It's close to "Don't worry, it'll be okay."

Leo

If my friend has an interview tomorrow, can I say, "Méi shì de. You've prepared well"?

You can, but saying only méi shì de might sound a little odd.

Leo

Why?

Because the interview hasn't happened yet, so you don't know the outcome. Better to say, "Don't be too nervous. Just do what you normally do."

Leo

So even when comforting someone, I shouldn't promise something I don't know.

Right. Méi shì de is more about saying that even if there is a problem, you can find a solution.

Leo

When a child falls while learning to ride a bike, adults often say, "You're okay. Get up."

Yes, but they should still check whether the child is hurt first.

Leo

You shouldn't pretend the pain doesn't exist just to make the child brave.

Well said. Comforting someone doesn't mean denying how they feel.

Leo

If a friend has just gone through a breakup, would méi shì de sound too casual?

Those three words alone would be a bit light. You could say, "I know this really hurts right now. Take your time."

Leo

First acknowledge how they feel, then stay with them.

Right. Not every problem can be instantly solved with méi shì.

Leo

Chinese teachers also sometimes tell students, "It's okay. Go ahead and speak."

That works well because it reduces the pressure of making mistakes.

Leo

When my students make a mistake in English, I say, "That's okay. Try again."

See? The two languages are very similar here.

Leo

Méi shì can also mean "I'm free," right?

Right. For example, someone asks, "Are you busy this afternoon?"

Leo

If I answer méi shì, it means I have no plans.

Exactly. You can also say, "I don't have much going on this afternoon."

Leo

That second sentence sounds a little more natural.

Yes, and more complete.

Leo

But I get nervous when someone suddenly asks, "Are you busy tonight?"

Because they haven't told you what they want yet.

Leo

If I say I'm free first, might they immediately ask me to help them move?

Very possibly.

Leo

Then can I ask, "What's up?" first?

Of course. That isn't rude. You're just finding out what the situation is.

Leo

Are you busy tonight?

What's up?

Leo

I want you to help me move a very heavy table.

Then I suddenly have plans tonight.

Leo

Haha, so "What's up?" can protect my time.

I wouldn't put it that way. It simply lets you get the information before deciding.

Leo

What if I really am free but don't want to go?

You can simply say, "Tonight isn't convenient for me."

Leo

I don't have to invent a fake plan?

No. "It isn't convenient" is already a complete answer.

Leo

But I just said méi shì, so they know I'm free.

Being free doesn't mean you have to say yes. Your time is yours, and you can choose how to use it.

Leo

That's an important difference.

Many people hear "I have no plans" as "You can schedule me anytime," but that isn't true.

Leo

If someone asks whether I'm busy this weekend and I say, "Nothing major," what does that mean?

It means you may have a few small plans, but there's still room to discuss it.

Leo

Room to discuss means I haven't said yes or no yet.

Right. Then the other person can tell you what the invitation is.

Leo

I'm realizing that yǒu shì, "having something," doesn't have to mean something serious.

Exactly. In this sentence, yǒu shì simply means having plans or being busy.

Leo

Does going for coffee count as having plans?

Of course. Rest is also time you've arranged for yourself.

Leo

Great. From now on, lying on the sofa all weekend won't count as having nothing to do.

You can say, "I have an important appointment."

Leo

What appointment?

A date with the sofa.

Leo

I will definitely never be late for that appointment.

And you won't get stuck in traffic.

Leo

There's another situation. I've heard méi shì after someone says thank you.

Right. In response to thanks, it means something like "It was nothing" or "No need to thank me."

Leo

For example, I hold the door for a coworker, they thank me, and I say méi shì.

Yes. That's very natural.

Leo

What if I help a friend move all day? Can I still say méi shì?

You can, though you might be trying to show that they don't need to be formal with you.

Leo

What if I'm actually exhausted?

You could say, "I am a little tired, but I'm glad I could help."

Leo

That expresses how I really feel without making my friend feel guilty.

Right. If you call everything méi shì, you can end up hiding your own effort.

Leo

Does Chinese culture tend to make people's efforts sound smaller than they are?

Some people do that. They feel it's more polite and puts less pressure on the other person.

Leo

But after a while, they might feel uncomfortable themselves.

Yes. In a close relationship, being more honest can actually be healthier.

Leo

Next time a friend asks me to help move, I can say, "Just buy me dinner."

That sounds very natural. Friends can help one another and still show appreciation.

Leo

So how do I choose between méi shì, méi guānxi, and bú kèqi?

When someone apologizes, use méi shì or méi guānxi.

Leo

When someone thanks you, bú kèqi is the clearest.

Right. For something small, you can also answer méi shì.

Leo

When someone is worried about me, I say wǒ méi shì, "I'm fine."

Exactly. To reassure someone, you can say méi shì de or bié dānxīn, "Don't worry."

Leo

When someone asks if I have plans, I say jīntiān méi shì, "I'm free today."

Very good. You've now separated four different situations.

Leo

But the hardest one is still when someone says méi shì while something is actually wrong.

Why are you so worried about that one?

Leo

Because I was supposed to meet a friend for dinner at six yesterday, but I arrived at six thirty.

Did you warn him in advance?

Leo

My phone was dead. He said méi shì, but he was very quiet throughout dinner.

Then he may genuinely have been unhappy.

Leo

I asked him later, and he said again that it really was fine.

Maybe he didn't want to discuss it then, or maybe he calmed down after dinner.

Leo

What should I do?

Give him one sincere apology and tell him what you'll do differently next time.

Leo

For example, "I'm sorry I made you wait half an hour. Next time I'll leave earlier."

Good. The point isn't to force him to say, "I forgive you." It's to take responsibility for your actions.

Leo

If he needs a little time, I should accept that too.

Right. Not every méi shì requires you to uncover the true answer immediately.

Leo

Sometimes taking action is more useful than asking over and over.

Exactly. Being on time next time is the best explanation.

Leo

What if traffic is bad again next time?

Charge your phone, leave earlier, and notify him as soon as you realize you'll be late.

Leo

It sounds like what I need isn't a Chinese lesson but a time-management lesson.

You get a free mini-lesson today.

Leo

I've also come across another answer that confused me.

What was it?

Leo

I asked a coworker to have dinner with us this weekend. He said, "It's okay, I won't go."

Are you sure he said méi shì and not méi shénme shì, "nothing much"?

Leo

He said, "Thanks, it's okay. I won't go."

Here, méi shì might mean "No need." He's saying it's fine for him not to join.

Leo

So he wasn't saying he had no plans. He was politely declining.

Right. A fuller version would be, "It's okay, you all go. I won't join this time."

Leo

Do I need to keep inviting him?

You can check once: "Are you sure? We'd love to have you."

Leo

After checking once, if he still says no, I stop.

Right. Being warm doesn't mean never giving someone a chance to decline.

Leo

What if he says, "You all go. It's fine. I'm going to rest at home"?

Then it's even clearer. He wants to rest.

Leo

I can say, "Okay, we'll ask you again next time."

Very natural, and it leaves both sides feeling comfortable.

Leo

In Chinese, méi shì seems to be constantly helping people reduce pressure.

It often does. It makes mistakes feel smaller, worries feel lighter, and thanks feel less formal.

Leo

But if you use it badly, it can also cover up a real problem.

Right. For example, something goes wrong at work and the person in charge just says méi shì without dealing with it.

Leo

The problem won't disappear by itself because of two words.

Exactly. Check what needs checking and fix what needs fixing.

Leo

Before a doctor has examined someone, I can't tell a sick person that they're definitely fine either.

Right. You can say, "Try not to worry too much. Let's get it checked."

Leo

That offers reassurance while still being responsible.

Yes. We don't need to make everything sound serious, but we shouldn't promise an outcome casually either.

Leo

In a more formal workplace situation, what can replace méi shì?

Depending on the situation, say, "The problem has been resolved," or "There is currently no impact."

Leo

That sounds more specific.

Right. You could also say, "I've handled it, and I'll check again tomorrow."

Leo

Specific information is more reassuring than méi shì.

Especially when the other person needs to know the outcome.

Leo

We can be more relaxed with friends, but at work we should explain the situation.

That's a very useful principle.

Leo

Let's do a quick practice round.

Okay. I'll give you a situation, and you choose the most natural reply.

Leo

I'm ready.

You accidentally step on someone's foot, and they say méi shì.

Leo

I say, "Thank you, and I'm really sorry."

Good. Second: a friend asks whether you're busy this afternoon.

Leo

First I ask, "What's up?"

Very smart. Third: a friend is nervous about tomorrow's Chinese exam.

Leo

I say, "Don't worry too much. You've prepared very carefully."

That's more specific than just saying méi shì de.

Leo

What's number four?

A coworker gets an important number wrong but says, "It should be fine."

Leo

I say, "Let's check it anyway."

Good. Last one: your sister looks unhappy but says méi shì.

Leo

I say, "It's okay if you don't want to talk now. Come find me when you do."

Full marks. It looks like you'll be able to sleep tonight.

Leo

Not yet. I need to confirm one thing first.

What is it?

Leo

I was twenty minutes late. Are you really not angry?

I'm really not angry, but you missed the egg tarts that had just come out of the oven.

Leo

What? There aren't any left?

I saved one for you, but Xiaohua walked past and knocked it onto the floor.

Leo

Is Xiaohua okay?

She's fine. The egg tart is very much not fine.

Leo

This time I understood completely.

Then summarize it for us. How many common meanings does méi shì have?

Leo

First, when someone apologizes, it means "No problem."

Second?

Leo

When someone is worried about you, wǒ méi shì means "I'm fine," or "I don't want to talk right now."

Go on.

When asking about plans, méi shì means "free." In response to thanks, it can also mean "No need to thank me."

And when reassuring someone, méi shì de means "Don't worry too much."

Leo

Most importantly, don't listen only to the literal words. Look at the tone, the relationship, and the situation.

If something really needs to be handled, take action instead of covering it with méi shì.

Leo

If someone says méi shì, check on them once and then respect their answer.

And if you need something yourself, try to be clear so people don't have to keep guessing.

Leo

Have you ever heard someone say méi shì and known immediately that something was wrong?

Tell us in the comments how you responded.

Leo

You can also write one example sentence for each meaning of méi shì that you learned today.

Thank you for staying with us through these two simple yet not-so-simple characters.

Leo

Next time someone says méi shì, I finally won't get nervous right away.

Good. We'll see you next time and keep learning to understand natural Chinese together.
