Hey everyone! Welcome to a new episode of Simply Natural Chinese. I'm Xiao Yue.

Hi everyone, I'm Leo.

Leo, check out this video on my phone. I was eating noodles while watching it and almost burst out laughing.

Haha, here we go again. Every time I come to the shop, you're either eating or about to eat, and your phone is always on.

You caught me. I actually have this habit — I have to have a video on whenever I eat.

Leo

I've been observing you for a while. This habit of yours — I've never quite gotten it.

Don't get it? Then today let's talk about exactly this — it's called "yòng shì pín xià fàn," using videos to go with your meal.

Leo

"Yòng shì pín xià fàn"? I recognize each character, but together I'm a bit lost.

Haha, "xià fàn" is a fun word. Let me teach you the most common usage first.

Leo

Alright, go ahead, I'm all ears.

For example, when you eat plain white rice, you want a side dish to go with it, right?

Leo

Of course. Plain white rice alone is way too dry — you can barely swallow it.

So Chinese people say this dish is "hěn xià fàn." It means it pairs perfectly with rice, and makes you want to eat another bowl.

Leo

Oh — so "xià" here means "to go with," and "xià fàn" basically means it makes your rice taste better.

Exactly. Like red-braised pork is xià fàn, mapo tofu is xià fàn, and yú xiāng pork shreds are xià fàn too.

Leo

I noticed a pattern — it seems like they're all bold-flavored dishes?

Basically, yeah. Salty, spicy, saucy — those are the most xià fàn. Plain stir-fried veggies aren't really xià fàn.

Leo

Then what does "yòng shì pín xià fàn" mean? You can't really pair a video with your food.

Haha, that's the fun part. We borrowed "xià fàn" and applied it to videos.

Leo

Borrowed how? You lost me.

It means this video pairs perfectly with a meal. Watching it doesn't get in the way of eating — it actually makes the food taste better.

Leo

So the video here acts like a side dish, going with my rice.

Exactly! Like I might say "this show is so xià fàn," meaning it's kept me company through several meals.

Hold on, so it's a whole habit — you have to have a video playing on the side when you eat?

Yes. For a lot of young people, you literally can't get the food down without a video.

Leo

Really? It's not that dramatic, is it?

Trust me. Eight out of ten people in my circle are like this.

Leo

Then where did this habit come from? I feel like people didn't used to do this.

I think the biggest reason is that a lot of young people now eat alone.

Leo

What's wrong with eating alone?

Think about it — sitting at the table alone, staring at a bowl of noodles, in total silence — isn't it a bit… weird?

Leo

Mm, it does feel a little lonely.

And time stretches out. A meal that should take ten minutes feels like half an hour in that silence.

Leo

So putting on a video is to feel less alone?

Right. It's like someone's eating with you. People in the video are talking, laughing, cooking — your room doesn't feel empty anymore.

Leo

I see, it's a kind of company.

Another reason is that life moves so fast now.

Leo

How so?

Many people get home from work at nine or ten p.m. Eating might be the only time of day they get to relax.

Leo

So eating isn't just eating — you also want to unwind while you're at it.

Exactly. If you just shove food in your face, that's a waste of the moment.

Leo

So pairing a video means eating and de-stressing at the same time.

Yes! That's why a lot of people start thinking on their commute home, "What am I eating tonight? What show am I pairing it with?"

Leo

You even plan the pairing in advance. That's serious dedication.

That's what we call a sense of ritual in everyday life.

"Sense of ritual" — I've heard this phrase a few times. Does it mean making ordinary things feel special?

Yes. Simply put, it's adding a little bit of joy to the everyday.

Leo

Got it. Let me ask another one — what about working from home all weekend?

Even more can't-do-without. On my weekends at home, from morning till night — eating, cleaning, washing dishes — I always have a video on in the background.

So for you, a video isn't just "xià fàn" anymore — it's more like "keeping you company through life."

That's a spot-on summary.

Leo

What about eating with someone else? Do you still need a video?

Usually no, because the conversation is enough. So "yòng shì pín xià fàn" is mainly a solo-dining solution.

Leo

A little seasoning for a lonely appetite.

That's a brilliant metaphor!

Leo

You said earlier that food tastes better. Does a video also affect how fast you eat?

It does! Which brings us to another word — "gàn fàn."

Leo

"Gàn fàn"? I've seen this online but I'm not totally sure what it means.

So "gàn" here is a verb meaning doing something with force. "Gàn fàn" means eating with force.

Leo

Eating with force… sounds like going to war.

Haha, kind of. Young people love saying it because it gives this satisfying, full-throttle vibe.

Leo

So "gàn fàn" isn't ordinary eating — it's eating with full commitment.

Right. Like when you get home starving, open your takeout box, and clear it in three or four bites — that's "gàn fàn."

Leo

And what about "gàn fàn rén"?

It means calling yourself someone who eats well, loves to eat, and eats both fast and with gusto.

Leo

So you're a gàn fàn rén too?

Of course! Every day at noon, the second it hits twelve, I drop whatever I'm doing — "Time to gàn fàn!"

Leo

Haha, sounds like you're really passionate about this whole eating thing.

Yeah. And you'll notice — with a video on, gàn fàn happens even faster.

Leo

Why?

Because the video grabs your attention, and you finish your food without realizing it. You snap back, and the bowl is empty.

Leo

I see — it's basically eating while being entertained-distracted.

Right. That's why we say "a true gàn fàn rén eats and entertains at the same time."

Leo

Eat and entertain — that's a great phrase.

And it's not just faster eating — your mood improves too.

Leo

The way you put it, I kind of want to try it.

Then start today. Try it once when you get home.

Leo

But I grew up in the UK, and my family has zero habit like this.

Really? What does your family do during meals then?

My parents are strict. When the whole family sits down to eat, no screens are allowed at all.

All screens? Phones too?

Leo

Phones go in another room. The TV has to be off, and tablets are absolutely out of the question.

Wow, that strict? Why?

My mum always says mealtime is family-talk time. Looking at a screen wastes that chance.

That's actually a really nice idea. What do you talk about during meals?

Everything. How school went, what kind of trouble Sophie got into, what's happening with Dad's work.

Sophie's your sister, right? Sounds like your dinner table is pretty lively.

Leo

Yeah, my sister loves to talk. She can go on for half an hour every meal.

Haha, so your family meals must run pretty long.

Leo

About an hour minimum for each meal. Eat slow, talk slow.

In China, a meal that lasts an hour is either a banquet or Chinese New Year.

Leo

So how long is a regular meal for you guys?

Eating alone, I'm done in ten minutes. With family, maybe twenty to thirty.

Big difference. When I first came back to China, I couldn't keep up. Everyone else was done while I was still on my first bite.

Haha, I can picture it — you sitting there alone, chewing in slow motion.

Yeah, and then my grandma would stare at me, eyes saying "why are you so slow?" — and I was too embarrassed to speed up.

Your grandma doesn't speak English, right?

Leo

Not a word. So back then we could only communicate with our eyes.

Haha, her eyes saying "eat faster," and yours saying "I'm doing my best."

Leo

Pretty much. Eventually I adapted to the Chinese pace and my eating sped up a bit.

Is Sophie still in the UK? Has she picked up any Chinese habits?

She's still studying in London. When we video chat, I've noticed she's started putting on videos while she eats.

Ha! That's the power of trends.

Leo

Right. Even my mum can't control her anymore — she's in a different city.

What would your mum think if she knew you've also started watching videos while eating?

Leo

She'd probably shake her head, sigh, and then send me a long voice message lecturing me.

Haha, sounds very loving.

Now tell me one thing — when you live alone and eat, do you really not put on a video?

Leo呃……

Uh… well…

Haha, I read your face. Come on, fess up.

Fine, I admit it. When I eat alone, I put on a podcast.

Ha! Got you!

But a podcast is different! You listen to it, you don't watch it.

It's essentially the same thing — both are about making the silence go away.

Leo

Now that you put it that way, I guess so.

So you said your family didn't allow pairing videos, but when you live alone, you quietly pair a podcast.

Leo

When you summarize it like that, I suddenly feel really inconsistent.

Haha, you just swapped the format of "xià fàn." Video became podcast, picture became sound.

Turns out I'm also doing "yòng podcast xià fàn."

Totally fair to say that. And this habit actually exists everywhere, not just in China.

True, my friends in London put on Netflix while eating too.

See, so it's not that Chinese people are special — it's that modern people all need a bit of company.

Leo

Then why is the phrase "xià fàn" especially popular in China?

Probably because China's food delivery culture is so developed. Ordering and eating takeout alone is super common.

Oh, takeout makes solo dining easier, so the demand for "company while eating" is especially high.

Right. Plus there's a ton of short videos, variety shows, and TV dramas — perfectly matched supply.

Leo

So why isn't there an equivalent English word? I thought hard and couldn't find one.

Because in English you usually just say "watch something while I eat" — you need a whole sentence.

Leo

Right. Chinese can be incredibly compact sometimes — one word wraps the whole scene up.

Leo

So the real topic behind this is actually "how modern people handle loneliness"?

That's a high-level summary.

Leo

Haha, talking with you I learn more than just words — I pick up a lot of ideas too.

We learn from each other. I think "yòng shì pín xià fàn" is just the surface — there's a lot underneath.

Leo

Aside from videos, do Chinese people have other ways of having company at meals?

Sure. A lot of older folks like to eat while listening to the radio, or leaving the TV on as background noise.

That's similar to my mum's mum — she eats while listening to BBC too.

Right. The essence is the same — you need a little sound so the space doesn't feel so empty.

Leo

The content young people pair with is different from older folks, right?

Very different. Young people like fast-paced, light stuff. Older people prefer slower, info-heavy content.

Leo

Can you give me some examples? What do young people watch as xià fàn?

Variety shows top the list — fast-paced, packed with laughs. Eating and laughing at the same time feels great.

Leo

What else?

Mukbang — eating broadcasts — are also huge. You eat while watching someone else eat.

Leo

Wait, watching someone else eat? Isn't that a bit weird?

Don't knock it. Watching someone enjoy their food makes your own meal taste better.

Leo

Psychology is wild.

There's also the hands-on type — cooking videos, crafting, fixing stuff.

Leo

Why is that xià fàn too?

Because they don't require much brainpower. Watching someone do something is super relaxing.

Leo

Oh, so the key to xià fàn content is — it can't be too brain-burning.

Exactly. If you eat while watching a mystery thriller, your food goes cold before you've taken a few bites.

Leo

Haha, the opposite of xià fàn shén qì is a brain-burning shén qì.

That contrast is brilliant — we could put it in our video title.

Leo

What about short videos? Everyone scrolls them now, and they're so convenient during meals.

Short videos count as xià fàn, but they're a bit different from shows and variety programs.

Leo

Different how?

Each one is so short, the pacing keeps switching, and after a meal your brain might feel empty.

Leo

So short videos are more like snacks, not a proper meal.

That's such a good metaphor. Short videos are snacks, long videos are the main course.

Leo

So most people still choose long videos for xià fàn?

Yes. Long videos have continuity — they can keep you company through multiple meals, with something to look forward to each day.

Leo

So xià fàn is also about chasing a kind of sustained companionship.

Right. Especially with binge-watching — that "I get to keep watching when I get home tonight" feeling is its own kind of joy.

Leo

I'm starting to get it, but I still have one small question.

Go ahead.

Leo

Won't eating this way make you more and more dependent on screens?

That's a good question. Honestly I reflect on it sometimes — am I pairing videos too much?

Leo

So what do you do?

On weekends I try one or two meals with nothing on, eating in silence. But honestly, the first few minutes feel really weird.

Leo

So it's a matter of balance — not all good or all bad.

Right. Xià fàn shén qì is a tool. It makes solo dining more comfortable, but you don't want it to become a dependency.

So to wrap up — "xià fàn" is a really widespread habit among young Chinese people.

Right. On the surface it's pairing video with food. Underneath it's solving the loneliness of eating alone.

Leo

And the core requirement is that the content is light, fast-paced, and not brain-burning.

Exactly. If you also eat alone, a "xià fàn shén qì" really can make that one meal feel different.

I've decided I'll try it starting tonight. I'm going to find a Chinese variety show to pair with my fried rice.

Hope you find your own xià fàn shén qì soon.

Leo

Haha, thanks, teacher.
