Hey everyone! Welcome to a new episode of Simply Natural Chinese! I'm Xiao Yue.

Hey everyone, I'm Leo.

Leo, when you came into the shop today, you didn't say a word and just sat there zoning out. What's going on?

Oh, it's nothing major. I just ran into something on the way here that's been stuck in my head.

What happened?

I was just buying coffee, and when I was ordering, I wanted to say "iced americano" in Chinese, but my brain thought of "iced americano" in English first, and then I translated it into Chinese.

Haha, and then?

Leo

Then I paused for a second, and the cashier just kept staring at me.

It was just a second or two though, right?

Leo

Yeah, just a second or two, but it felt super awkward.

Well, you got the words out in the end, so it's fine.

I did say it, but I was thinking — I've been learning Chinese for almost two years now. Why does my brain still think in English first?

That's a really good question. Today let's talk about exactly this — how to think in Chinese.

Leo

Yeah. What you just described — a lot of Chinese learners have experienced the same thing.

Leo

Really? It's not just me?

Nope. Most people learning a foreign language think in their native language first when they speak.

Leo

So is that a problem?

Think about it — when you speak English, do you need to think in another language first?

Leo

No, I just say it directly.

Exactly. But when you speak Chinese, there's an extra step in between — translation.

Leo

You mean thinking in English first, then translating to Chinese.

Exactly. That's called "translation mindset."

Leo

Translation mindset.

If you keep using the translation mindset, your Chinese will have a hard time sounding natural. Because every time before you speak, you have to wait for that translation process to finish.

Leo

Mm, no wonder I always feel like I'm half a beat behind when chatting with people.

So why do you think you keep translating?

Leo

Habit, I guess. I've been thinking in English my whole life.

Right, that's the first reason — habit. You've used English for over twenty years. Your brain has already built a nice smooth path.

Leo

Like a highway.

Haha, that's a great analogy. English in your brain is a highway, and Chinese is probably still a little trail.

Leo

With potholes.

Haha, right. Another reason is vocabulary. If you want to say something but don't know how to say it in Chinese, your brain automatically goes back to English.

Exactly! Sometimes I want to describe something but can't think of the Chinese word, and the English one is all that comes to mind.

There's also a more hidden reason — a sense of security.

Leo

A sense of security? What does security have to do with it?

When you think in English, you're confident that what you mean is correct, right?

Leo

Mm, yeah.

But when you think in Chinese, you're not sure, and you're afraid of making mistakes.

Leo

Yeah, I'm worried that what I say might be wrong and people will think it's weird.

So your brain automatically picks the safe route — think it out in English first, then translate to Chinese.

Leo

Like my brain is trying to protect me.

Right, but this "protection" is actually slowing you down.

Leo

How so?

Think about it — when you're eating with friends and everyone's chatting fast. If you have to translate every sentence before you say it...

Leo

Everyone's already moved on to the next topic while I'm still translating the last one.

Exactly! Especially when there's a group of people chatting.

Leo

I often can't get a word in. By the time I figure out what to say, the topic has already moved on.

So do you want to change that?

Leo

Of course! But how do I start? It feels so hard.

It's actually not as hard as you think. Let me share a few methods.

Leo

Okay okay, I'm all ears.

The first method is super simple — whatever you see, think of it in Chinese.

Leo

Yeah. For example, if you're walking down the street and you see a dog, don't think "dog" in your head — just think "gou" directly.

Leo

Yeah. See a tree, think "shu." See a traffic light, think "hong lv deng." It's raining, think "xia yu le."

Leo

That really isn't hard. I don't have to say it out loud, right?

Nope, just think it in your head. You can practice anytime, anywhere — walking, riding the subway, waiting in line.

Leo

What if I see something and don't know how to say it in Chinese?

Just skip it, or describe it with words you do know. Like if you don't know how to say "fire truck"...

What's "xiaofangche"?

It's a fire truck. If you don't know the word, that's fine — you can just think "big red car."

Leo

Oh, use simple words as a substitute.

Right, the point is that you're thinking in Chinese. Every word doesn't have to be perfect.

Leo

Alright, I'll start practicing this one today.

The second method — talking to yourself.

Leo

Talking to myself? Like just talking to myself alone?

Yeah, talk to yourself in Chinese. Like when you're making breakfast...

Leo

I make breakfast every morning.

Then while you're cooking, you can say things like "I'm gonna fry an egg now," "the oil is hot," "done, time to eat."

Leo

Standing in the kitchen talking to myself in Chinese...

What's wrong?

Leo

It feels a bit like being a weirdo.

Haha, maybe a little. But think about it — no one's around to hear you.

Leo

That's true.

Plus you can take your time, think as long as you want. Unlike chatting with others where you worry about making them wait.

Leo

Mm, there's really no pressure.

You can do it while washing dishes too — "I'm washing dishes," "this bowl is so greasy," "finally done."

Leo

Haha, "this bowl is so greasy" — I'll remember that one.

When you just said "this bowl is so greasy," did you think in English first?

Leo

Hmm... I don't think so!

See? That's what it feels like to think directly in Chinese.

Leo

Wow, you're right! I didn't even notice!

Yeah, with more practice, more and more sentences will come out without needing to translate.

Leo

Great, are there other methods?

The third method — review your day in Chinese.

Leo

Review my day?

Yeah. Like before bed, go through your day in Chinese in your head.

"Today I went to work, taught three students, had beef noodles for lunch, one student was really naughty in the afternoon..." Like that?

Exactly like that. Every word doesn't have to be right — the key is you're practicing organizing your thoughts in Chinese.

Leo

Would writing it down be even better?

Writing it down is great too. When you write, you pay more attention to word choice and sentence structure.

Leo

Like keeping a diary?

Yeah, you can write a short diary entry in Chinese. It doesn't have to be long — three or four sentences is plenty.

Leo

Alright, I'll start trying tonight.

The fourth method is a bit harder — turn off the subtitles when watching Chinese content.

Leo

Turn off subtitles?

Yeah, or just use Chinese subtitles without the English translation.

Leo

That's... a bit tough for me.

You can start with something easy. Like a Chinese short video, just a few dozen seconds long.

Leo

Watch without subtitles first and see how much I can understand?

Yeah. If you don't understand, turn on the subtitles and watch it once, then turn them off and watch again.

Leo

Repeat a few times and I'll remember?

Yep. Each time you'll find you understand a bit more.

Leo

What about TV dramas?

Sure, but pick something simple, slice-of-life type stuff. Don't jump straight into historical dramas.

Leo

Why not historical dramas?

Because the dialogue in historical dramas is way too hard. Even some Chinese people don't fully understand them.

Leo

Yeah. Stuff like "I, the Emperor, decree your death at the third watch — who dares keep you alive till the fifth" — you definitely don't need to learn that.

Leo

Haha, yeah, definitely not.

Just pick a drama that has lots of everyday conversations between two people.

Leo

Okay, I'll look for one.

Here's another little trick — switch your phone's language to Chinese.

Leo

Oh, I've tried that before!

And then?

Leo

Then I couldn't find where "Settings" was anymore, so I switched back to English.

Hahaha, well your Chinese is way better now than it was back then. You can try again.

Leo

Alright, I'll switch it when I get home.

One heads-up though.

Leo

What's that?

Don't do it during work hours, or you might not be able to reply to your students' parents.

Leo

Haha, got it, got it.

Let me recap these methods. The easy ones: think of things in Chinese when you see them, talk to yourself, review your day and keep a diary. The advanced ones: watch Chinese content without subtitles, switch your phone language.

Leo

Yeah, I think I can start doing the easy ones right away.

Right, build up the easy ones as habits first, then gradually add the harder ones.

Leo

Xiao Yue, I have a question.

Go ahead.

Sometimes I try to think about things in Chinese, but when something complicated comes up, my brain automatically switches back to English. Like planning work stuff, or doing math.

That's totally normal.

Leo正常?

Normal?

Yeah. A lot of bilingual people have this. Simple stuff in Chinese is fine, but when it comes to complex things that require deep thinking, they switch back to their native language.

Leo

So what should I do?

No need to rush. Get your everyday Chinese thinking down first, then slowly expand to more complex topics.

Leo

Take it step by step?

Right. And you don't have to think in Chinese all the time. If thinking in English is faster and more accurate for some things, then use English. It's fine.

Leo

Really? I thought I had to go full Chinese for it to work.

Nope. Even if just a small part of your day is spent thinking in Chinese, that's already progress from yesterday.

Leo

That takes a lot of pressure off.

The worst thing about learning a language is putting too much pressure on yourself. Too much pressure and you end up not wanting to learn at all.

Yeah, that's how I've been feeling. I thought after almost two years, I should be really good by now. When I can't do it, it's really frustrating.

Everyone learns at their own pace. Just being aware that you have a "translation mindset" is already a big step.

Leo

Thanks, Xiao Yue.

Leo, let me ask you an interesting question.

Leo

What question?

Have you ever noticed that your personality feels a bit different when you speak Chinese versus when you speak English?

Leo

Hmm... now that you mention it, yeah, kind of.

How so?

When I speak English, I talk faster, I'm more confident, and I like to crack jokes.

In Chinese, I speak slower, more carefully, and sometimes I get a bit shy.

There's a really interesting concept for that — it's called "language personality."

Leo

Language personality? What does that mean?

It means that when people use different languages, they might show different personality traits.

Leo

It's not just me?

It's not just you. Lots of people say they're more polite and reserved in Chinese, and more direct in English.

Same here. In English I can just say "No," but in Chinese I'd say "Hmm, well, that might not be too convenient."

Haha, that's already so authentic. "Not too convenient" is such a Chinese way to say it.

Leo

I learned it from you.

So what do you think your "Chinese personality" is like?

Leo

Hmm... quieter, more polite, and sometimes I feel a bit dumb.

You're not dumb at all.

I mean, because I can't think of a lot of words, I can't express myself clearly. Other people might think I don't really understand.

I get it. It's not that you're not smart — it's that your Chinese level hasn't caught up to your brain yet.

Leo

What do you mean?

You have a lot of ideas in your head, but the "exit" for Chinese is still pretty small. Lots of ideas, small exit — they can't all get out at once.

Haha, that's a great analogy. My brain is packed with stuff, but the door is too small — everything's stuck.

So all these methods we talked about today are about making that door bigger.

So my thoughts can go straight out the Chinese door without having to take a detour through English.

Exactly, that's a great way to put it.

Leo

Xiao Yue, I want to share a personal story.

Sure, go ahead.

A while back I video-called my grandma. You know, my grandma doesn't understand any English at all.

Mm.

Leo

We talked for about twenty minutes, and after we hung up, I suddenly realized something.

What was it?

During the entire conversation, I wasn't translating in my head at all. Everything was directly in Chinese.

Really? No translating at all?

Not at all. Because I had no choice — my grandma only speaks Chinese. I couldn't exactly think in English first and translate.

So your brain automatically switched to Chinese mode.

Leo

Yeah, completely automatic. And I spoke way more smoothly than usual.

That shows you can actually already think in Chinese — you just don't push yourself to do it normally.

Leo

Because English is always available as an option, my brain just gets lazy.

Haha, brains really are lazy. So here's a great method — create a time in your day with no English at all.

Leo

A time with no English?

Yeah. Set aside a period every day for Chinese only. During that time — watch Chinese, think in Chinese, speak Chinese, no English.

Leo

How long?

You can start with half an hour.

Leo

Half an hour I can probably handle.

Pick a fixed time, like that half hour during dinner.

Leo

Watch Chinese videos during dinner, only think in Chinese...

Yeah, that's your "Chinese Time."

Leo

Haha, "my Chinese Time" — sounds so official.

Over time, you can gradually increase it — from half an hour to an hour, then two hours.

Leo

Maybe someday I'll be thinking in Chinese all day long.

When that day comes, your Chinese will truly be amazing.

Leo

Then my grandma would be so happy when we chat.

Your grandma would definitely think her grandson is amazing.

Leo

Haha, I hope so too.

Leo

Xiao Yue, we've talked about so many methods today. Let me try to summarize.

Sure, go ahead.

Leo

First, think of things in Chinese whenever you see them.

Mm.

Leo

Second, talk to yourself in Chinese.

Right.

Leo

Third, review your day in Chinese, or keep a Chinese diary.

Mm-hm.

Leo

Fourth, try turning off subtitles when watching Chinese videos.

Right.

Leo

Fifth, switch your phone language to Chinese.

Mm.

Leo

You remembered them all, nice.

Leo

And the most important thing — don't put too much pressure on yourself. Take it slow.

Couldn't have said it better.

Today's topic made me realize that thinking in Chinese isn't just a study technique — it's a habit.

Right. Building a habit takes time — it won't happen in a day or two. But as long as you practice a little every day, it'll feel more and more natural.

Leo

Yeah, I'm starting today.

Alright, that's it for today. Have any of you tried thinking in Chinese? How do you practice? Let us know in the comments.
