Leo

Xiao Yue, I didn't sleep at all last night, because of a German guy.

A German guy? What did he do?

I was in line at a coffee shop, and this German guy in front of me talked with the owner about everything from the weather to rent, for ten minutes, without getting stuck once.

And then you asked him how long he'd been studying.

Leo

I couldn't help it. He said eight months.

Eight months.

Leo

Xiao Yue, I've been studying for two years and three months.

So last night you just lay in bed doing the math.

Leo

All night long. How much longer do I actually need, to get to where he is?

I promise I'll answer that today. But before I do, I want to ask you a smaller question first.

Leo你问。

Go ahead.

This "fluent" you keep talking about — what does it actually look like?

Leo

Fluent is... saying whatever I want to say, without translating in my head first.

Saying it to whom? About what? Where?

Leo

Um... let me think about that.

You can't come up with an answer, can you?

Leo

I really can't.

Leo, this is the most important thing today. You've been chasing something for two years and three months, and you can't even describe what it looks like.

Leo

When you put it that way, my stomach just dropped.

You're not running slowly. You're running a race with no finish line. Of course it feels like you'll never get there.

Leo

So how are you going to help me today?

I'll answer three questions. One: what those two years are actually worth. Two: what fluency really is. Three: how much longer you need — and I'll give you real numbers.

Leo

Actual numbers? Okay, I'm listening.

Let's do the math first. These two years — how many times a week did you study?

Leo

That's... a little embarrassing to say out loud.

No embarrassment today. Today we just count.

On a good week, three times, half an hour each. When I'm busy, I don't touch it for a week or two.

Let's use the good weeks. Three times a week, half an hour each — how much is that per week?

Leo

An hour and a half.

Fifty-two weeks in a year. Do the multiplication.

Leo

Fifty-two times one point five... seventy-eight hours.

And two years and three months?

Leo

About... a hundred and seventy hours.

Leo, you haven't studied for two years and three months. You've studied a hundred and seventy hours, and spread them thin over two years.

Leo

Spread them thin... that's a brutal way to put it, but it's accurate.

Now let's count the German guy. How long does he study each day?

I asked. Two hours every morning, without fail. And he lives in China, so the moment he steps outside, he has to use it.

So in eight months, just sitting down to study, that's four hundred and eighty hours. Not counting everything he uses in daily life.

Leo

Four hundred and eighty... that's three times mine.

So he's studied for eight months, but his Chinese is three times older than yours.

Leo

Three times older. Xiao Yue, I don't need to memorize that one — I'll never forget it.

We have a saying in Chinese for exactly the way you study. Three days fishing, two days drying the nets.

Leo

Three days fishing, two days drying the nets?

Fish for three days, then spend two days drying the nets. Start, stop, start, stop — never a stretch of consistency.

Leo

That image is painfully accurate. I fish for three days, then dry the nets for two weeks.

The opposite word is rì jī yuè lěi. Piling up day by day, accumulating month by month.

Leo

Day by day, month by month... that sounds slow.

Slow, but it's always adding up. Yours is add a little, lose a little, add a little again.

But Xiao Yue, I don't get it. If the total is the same, shouldn't studying slowly and studying fast come out the same?

Completely different. Let me give you an analogy. You take a bucket to fetch water — but this bucket has a hole in the bottom.

Leo

A leaky bucket.

Right. Pour fast, and the water level rises. Pour a little, wait a week, pour a little more — what happens?

Leo

It all leaks out. I come back and the bucket is still empty.

For two years, you've been pouring water into a leaky bucket, one spoonful at a time.

Leo

So every time I sit down, the first thing I do is pick up what I forgot last time.

That's your biggest waste. It's not that you study too little — it's that you forget what you learned before you ever got to use it.

Leo

So I need to pour faster than it leaks.

That's what intensity means. With language learning, density matters more than total.

Leo

I need to write that down. Density matters more than total.

Okay, question one is done. Now question two — the one I most want you to hear.

Leo

What fluency actually is.

I won't define it yet. First, some questions. When you listen to a podcast like ours, how much do you understand?

Leo

Everyday conversation? Seventy, eighty percent.

When friends message you on WeChat, can you read them?

Leo

Mostly, yes — except the new slang.

What about a simple news article?

Leo

Slowly, I get the gist.

Handwriting?

Leo

Handwriting, no. I pick up a pen and my mind goes blank. But typing is fine.

So let me ask — when you say you're not fluent, which one of those are you talking about?

Leo

Speaking. The moment I open my mouth.

So you have four skills, three of them work, and you take the weakest one and use it to fail your whole self.

Leo……

...I've never thought about it that way.

You're like a student who took four exams — three eighties and one forty. And at home, you only tell your mom about the forty.

Leo

Haha, that is exactly the kind of person I am.

And let me tell you — for Chinese learners, those four lines spread apart much further than usual.

Leo

Because of characters. In most languages, if you can say it, you can write it. Not in Chinese — someone can speak well and not write a single character.

Leo

And the reverse too. I know someone who reads novels but sounds completely English the second he speaks.

Exactly. Those four lines can end up miles apart. You can't use one word to describe four different things.

Leo

So what should I say instead?

Don't say "my Chinese is bad." Say "my speaking is lagging behind."

Leo

My speaking is lagging behind.

Do those two sentences feel the same to you?

Completely different. The first is a death sentence. The second is... something I can actually work on.

That's the power of being specific. A vague piece of bad news just sits on you. A specific problem, you can start fixing.

I see this when I teach English too. Some of my students write beautifully and fall apart when they speak — but what they tell me is, "Teacher, my English is bad."

They're doing the same thing — one word covering four different things.

Leo

And I've been making the exact same mistake about myself.

That's normal — we're always hardest on ourselves. There's a Chinese word for this: duǎn bǎn, the short plank.

Leo短板?

The short plank?

A wooden bucket is made of many planks. How much water it holds isn't decided by the longest plank — it's decided by the shortest one.

Leo

So the shortest plank sets the water level for the whole bucket.

Right. But here's what people get wrong — they stare at the short plank and forget they've got three long ones.

Leo

That's me. Every day I obsess over not being able to speak, and completely forget I can already understand.

Okay, third thing. If you only take one thing away today, I want it to be this.

Leo

I'm ready.

Fluency is not a door. There is no day when you push it open and are fluent forever after.

Leo

Then what is it?

It's a ring of keys. You get one today, another tomorrow, collecting them one at a time.

Leo

One at a time... so what are these keys?

Let me count a few and you check yourself against them. Ordering food — can you?

Leo

Yes, that stopped being a problem long ago.

Taking a taxi — telling the driver where to go, changing the route halfway.

Leo

That too.

Calling your landlord to say the air conditioner is broken and asking him to send someone.

Leo

That one... I just did it last month. Stumbled through it, but got it done.

Then you've got that key. Next: at the hospital, telling a doctor exactly where it hurts, how many days, what kind of pain.

Leo

That one, no. Last time I ended up pointing.

A harder one: answering a phone call from a stranger.

Leo

Phone calls are my nightmare.

Have you ever thought about why phone calls are the hardest?

Leo

Because you can't see their face.

Exactly. No expressions, no gestures, no lip movements, and they're often walking around. Every helper you normally rely on is gone.

Leo

So phone calls aren't a little harder — they're a lot harder.

There's a harder one. Making a joke with a friend — and actually making them laugh.

Leo

That's brutal. When I tell a joke, my Chinese friends give me a polite little laugh.

And one more that many people never get their whole life: arguing in Chinese when you're angry.

Leo

Hahaha, arguing counts?

Of course. When people get worked up, their native language jumps out on its own. If you can still speak Chinese while angry, it's gotten into your body.

Leo

So what's the last key?

Understanding why a joke is funny. Not the literal words — the punchline itself.

Leo

That one I'm nowhere near.

That one's the furthest. But look — I just counted eight keys, and you already have four or five.

Leo

I've never counted it that way. I always felt like I was at zero.

Because you're using the door model. If the door isn't open, you're zero. Keys don't work that way — keys add up one at a time.

Leo

Flipping that around, I feel my whole body relax.

Then here's something even more relaxing. You're not fully fluent in your own native language either.

Leo

My native language? I've spoken English since I was a kid.

Then tell me — could you discuss an insurance contract in English?

Leo……

...No. Last time I bought insurance, I knew every single word he said, and put together I had no idea what he was talking about.

English is your native language and you still don't have the insurance key. So why demand that your Chinese collect every single key?

Leo

Xiao Yue, that one hit me.

Chinese people are the same. My dad had me go with him to get his phone fixed. They asked what model — he said, "You know, the big black one."

Leo

Hahaha, that's too real.

He's spoken Chinese his whole life, but in that shop, he was not fluent.

Leo

So fluency depends on the situation.

Right. There's a Chinese phrase, tuō kǒu ér chū — the words come out without thinking, running straight out of your mouth.

Leo

Straight out of your mouth.

You don't want vague fluency. You want the words to come out effortlessly in the handful of situations you actually need.

Leo

And the situations I actually need aren't that many.

Not many at all. So I suggest you change the question. Stop asking "when will I be fluent."

Leo

Then what should I ask?

Ask: which key do I want to get next month.

Leo

I can answer that in one second. I want to be able to tell a doctor where it hurts.

See the difference? One question makes you anxious for two years. The other, you can start on tonight.

Leo

But Xiao Yue, I still want that number. You promised.

Here it comes. Though after you hear it, you might feel bad first and relieved second.

Leo

Let me sit up straight.

There's a school in America that trains diplomats, and they sort the world's languages into tiers by how long they take to learn.

Leo

The hardest tier, together with Japanese, Korean, and Arabic. Their estimate is that an English speaker needs about 2,200 hours.

Leo

2,200? I'm at a hundred and seventy.

Don't panic yet. That number comes with a huge condition you need to know, otherwise it's just scary for nothing.

Leo

What condition?

Those 2,200 hours are meant to get a diplomat to negotiate in Chinese, read newspapers, and follow an entire meeting.

Leo

That's a very high level.

Extremely high. Now tell me — what do you want?

What I want is... to keep up with the conversation at dinner with friends. And to really talk with my grandma.

See? You don't want negotiations. You want dinners and your grandma.

Leo

But for two years I've been measuring myself against the highest standard there is.

You're holding a diplomat's ruler against your dinner-table Chinese. Of course you feel short every single day.

Leo

I've been scared for two years by a goal that was never mine.

That's harsher than anything I said.

Leo

So counting in hours, how long would it take me?

Let's run the numbers. One hour a day is 365 hours a year, so 2,200 hours is six years.

Leo六年。

Six years.

Three hours a day: a little over two years.

Leo

And at my current rate? An hour and a half a week.

You do that math.

Leo

Seventy-eight hours a year... 2,200 divided by 78...

Twenty-eight years.

Leo

Twenty-eight years?!

That number isn't there to crush you. It's there to show you one thing: what makes Chinese feel hard was never Chinese. It's how little you put in.

Leo

I always assumed I was just slow.

For the vast majority of people, it's not about being slow. But let me give you the good news right away, or you won't sleep again tonight.

Leo

Give me the good news.

Those 2,200 hours are the top line. What you want — dinners and conversations — is nowhere near that.

Leo

Roughly how much?

A few hundred hours and you'll be comfortable. You're at a hundred and seventy — the first key you want might be just fifty hours ahead of you.

Fifty hours... that's barely a month, if I study an hour and a half a day properly.

So your problem was never being 2,000 hours short. It's that you spread those hundred and seventy way too thin.

Xiao Yue, one more question. Why are some people just faster? Is there really such a thing as a language gift?

A little bit, but not nearly as much as you think. What really decides your speed is three things.

Leo

Which three?

The first we just covered: intensity. It's how much per day, not how many times per week.

Leo

And the second?

Second: whether there's someone waiting for you to speak.

Leo

Waiting for me to speak?

Think about that German guy. He's in China. He has to rent an apartment, see a doctor, haggle over prices, explain to his neighbor that his pipe is leaking.

Leo

Nobody can do those things for him.

Right. He isn't studying Chinese. He's living in Chinese.

He's living in Chinese... Xiao Yue, the biggest difference between us is right there in that sentence.

Your Chinese has always been a class. His Chinese is a tool.

Leo

A class can sit on the shelf. A tool can't — a tool has to get used today.

So build yourself some situations where you have no choice but to speak. A language partner, a community, the owner of a shop — anything, as long as someone is there waiting for you to open your mouth.

Leo

And the third?

The third is the hardest: whether you can hold back.

Leo

Hold back from what?

Hold back through the stretch where it hasn't reached huǒ hòu yet.

Leo

Huǒ hòu? I've seen that word in recipes.

It started as a cooking word — the size of the flame plus the length of time, together that's huǒ hòu. Now it works for anything. Saying someone's huǒ hòu isn't there yet means they're just short of ready.

Leo

So right now my huǒ hòu isn't there yet.

Exactly. I run a dessert shop, so I know this better than anyone. The hardest part of baking a cake isn't the recipe. It's the waiting.

Leo等?

The waiting?

Beginners love to open the oven door every two minutes to check if it's done.

Leo

And what happens?

All the heat escapes and the cake collapses. The more anxiously you check, the less it can finish baking.

Leo

So asking myself every day whether I've improved — that's opening the oven door.

You picked up that metaphor beautifully today.

Leo

I always thought being anxious was a good sign — it meant I cared.

Anxiety doesn't help. There's a saying in Chinese: an impatient person can't eat hot tofu.

Leo

An impatient person can't eat hot tofu?

Tofu straight out of the pot is scalding. The more you rush it into your mouth, the less you can eat it — and you burn your tongue. Wait one minute, and it goes down in one bite.

Leo

That one's so everyday, it stuck immediately.

Another one: you can't get fat in one bite. Nobody gets there in a single mouthful.

Leo

We have similar sayings back home, they're just not as fun as yours.

And one more word I think you'll like: lì gān jiàn yǐng.

Leo

Lì gān jiàn yǐng?

Stand a pole up in the sunlight, and the shadow appears instantly. It describes results that come immediately.

Leo

Instant shadow... that's exactly what I've been wanting.

That's the problem. Language learning is the least instant thing there is. It's a different word: qián yí mò huà.

Leo

Qián yí mò huà — that's a beautiful word.

Moving quietly, changing without you noticing. You can't feel it moving, but it hasn't stopped for a single day.

Leo

So what I should do is close the oven door and let it bake.

Right. Just keep feeding the fire on schedule, and stop lifting the lid.

Leo

Xiao Yue, one last question, and it's a bit strange.

Anything goes today.

Leo

Suppose one day I really am fluent. Then what?

That's a fantastic question. Nine out of ten people never think that far.

It just hit me — I've been chasing this for two years and never once wondered what's on the other side.

Let me ask you first: have you taken a driving test?

Leo

Yes, back in England.

The day you got your license — could you drive?

Leo……

...Honestly, no. My first time driving alone, my hands shook the whole way and I took the wrong turn.

A license isn't proof that you can drive. It's permission to start learning to drive.

Leo

That's beautifully put.

Fluency is the same. The day you're fluent isn't the day you've finished Chinese.

Leo

It's the day I can finally start living in Chinese.

So fluency isn't graduation.

Leo

It's enrollment.

Leo, your summarizing today is better than mine, and I'm the teacher here.

Leo

So what's fun on the other side of fluency?

Plenty. You'll start hearing when people have a second meaning underneath their words.

Leo

Words within words?

One meaning on the surface, another hiding underneath. Like when someone says, "That idea of yours is quite... unique."

Leo

Is that a compliment?

That depends on the huǒ hòu. Sometimes it's praise. Sometimes they think your idea is bad and are too polite to say so.

Leo

Oh no, I would never catch that.

That's the world after fluency. You start telling politeness from sincerity, which word brings someone closer and which one keeps them at a distance.

Leo

That sounds harder than learning vocabulary.

Harder, yes. But that's where it gets genuinely interesting.

Leo

Put that way, learning Chinese never really has an end.

It doesn't. But look at it another way — if it did have an ending, it wouldn't be nearly as fun.

Leo

I like that angle.

Alright, we've covered a lot. Summarize it back to me and let's see if this lesson landed.

Okay, let me try. One: I shouldn't count years, I should count hours. I haven't studied two years and three months — I've studied a hundred and seventy hours, spread over two years.

And the bucket.

Right — my bucket has a hole in it. Three days fishing, two days drying nets, and the water leaks out before it ever rises. Density matters more than total.

And the second?

Two: the "not fluent" I keep saying is only one of four lines. My listening and reading are fine. What I should say is that my speaking is lagging behind, not that my Chinese is bad.

Third?

Three, the big one. Fluency isn't a door, it's a ring of keys. I already have four or five. The question isn't when I'll be fluent — it's which key I want next month.

So which key do you want next month?

Leo

The hospital one. I'll memorize the body parts and the different ways to describe pain first.

Good. Fourth?

Four: those 2,200 hours belong to diplomats. I want dinners, conversations, and my grandma — nowhere near that number. I let a goal that was never mine scare me for two years.

Last one.

Last: three things decide the speed — intensity, whether someone's waiting for me to speak, and whether I can stop lifting the oven lid. An impatient person can't eat hot tofu, nobody gets fat in one bite, and the instant results I wanted simply don't exist here.

Full marks. You didn't miss a single one.

Leo

Honestly, Xiao Yue, the biggest thing I got today wasn't the numbers.

Then what was it?

It's finally knowing that for two years I've been fighting a finish line that doesn't exist. Every day I asked, how far do I still have to go.

And starting today, what will you ask?

Leo

I'll ask: what's one more thing I can do today.

The fact that you can say that means those two years and three months weren't wasted at all.

Leo

Thank you, Xiao Yue. When I think about that German guy now, it doesn't sting anymore.

Why not?

Because today I learned I was comparing the wrong thing. I should compare hours, not years. And his eight months are eight months I could never trade for, because he was living his life, not mine.

Alright, let's stop here today. I really want to hear your answers: how long have you been learning Chinese?

And a second question, more important than the first: name one thing you can do in Chinese now that you absolutely couldn't do a year ago.

It doesn't have to be big. Understanding one subway announcement counts as a key.

Leo

Write it in the comments. Next episode we'll pick a few and read them out one by one.

See you next time. Stop staring at how many years are left — count how many keys are already in your hand.
