Xiao Yue, yesterday I went to a dinner. I sat there for two hours and understood everything everyone said, but when it was my turn, I couldn't get out a single word.

Not a single word?

Right. I had so much I wanted to say in my head, but my mouth just wouldn't listen. In the end I only smiled and nodded.

So you just sat there for two hours, nodding the whole time?

Pretty much. I felt awful when I got home. I've been learning Chinese for almost two years — why am I still like this?

Leo, you've come to the right place with this one. There's actually a name for what you're going through — "mute foreign language."

Leo

Mute foreign language?

Right. You can read, listen, and understand, but the moment you open your mouth you freeze — you can't speak, like you've gone mute.

Leo

Mute... that sounds harsh, but it really does describe me.

Don't feel bad, it's super common. More than half of all language learners have been through this.

Leo

Really? It's not just me being dumb?

Not dumb at all. And here's something even more interesting — you're an English teacher yourself, right?

Leo

Yeah, I teach kids to speak English.

Then have you ever seen a student who knows the grammar cold and scores high on tests, but the second you ask them to speak English, they turn bright red and can't say a thing?

Leo

Yes! I have kids exactly like that. They understand everything, they just don't dare to speak.

See? The problem you've seen with English is the exact same one you have now, learning Chinese.

Haha, when you put it that way, I suddenly feel a bit better. So I'm not some special case.

Not at all. Today let's really dig into why you can understand but can't get the words out — and what to do about it.

Leo

Great, I came on the right day. You've even got tea here — let's take our time.

Yeah, tea and talk. No rush, one thing at a time. First, let me ask — how do you usually study Chinese?

Leo

I watch Chinese videos, listen to podcasts, memorize words, and watch your show.

Those are all great. But have you noticed — everything you just listed is about putting things into your head.

Leo

Putting things into my head... listening, reading, watching — someone gives it to me, and I take it in.

Right. We call that "input." Listening and reading are both input.

Leo

So output is... speaking and writing?

Exactly. Speaking and writing take what's in your head and bring it out — that's "output."

Leo

So I've been doing input all along, and almost no output.

Right. Think about it — you listen to and read Chinese every day, but how many sentences do you actually say out loud in a day?

Say... maybe not even one. I live alone, I teach English at work, and there's no one at home to speak Chinese with.

That's the crux of it. Input and output are actually two different skills.

Leo

Two different skills?

Right. Think of one as "recognizing" and the other as "producing." Understanding a word means you recognize it; being able to say it right away means you can use it. There's a big gap between the two.

Now I get it. It's like how I recognize a lot of characters, but if you ask me to write them, I can't produce a single one.

Exactly! Same idea. Recognizing and writing are two different things. Understanding and speaking are two different things too.

Leo

But why? I clearly understood it — why can't I say it?

Because your brain has been practicing the "understand" path all along, and never the "speak" path.

Leo

So I've basically never walked down that "speaking" path.

Right, that path is overgrown with weeds because you never use it. The one you walk most is "listening" — smooth and wide.

Leo

Haha, so the "speaking" path in my head is a little trail nobody walks.

Well put. What we're going to do today is start walking that little trail.

Leo

But the moment I think about speaking up, I get a little scared.

What are you afraid of? Tell me.

I'm afraid of getting it wrong. I'm afraid that the moment I speak, people will notice it's all a mess and laugh at me.

That fear of making mistakes is the biggest wall standing in front of your mouth.

Leo

A wall — yes, that's exactly how it feels. The words reach my lips and the wall pushes them back.

Let me ask you — when you teach English and a student gets it wrong, do you laugh at them?

Of course not! If they dare to speak I'm thrilled — if they get it wrong, I just help them fix it.

Then why do you assume that when people hear you speak Chinese, they'll laugh at you?

Leo

Well... you're right. I'm so easy on my students — why am I so hard on myself?

Because you treat speaking Chinese like a test, where a mistake means losing points and losing face.

Leo

Right, it's like there's always a teacher in my head grading me.

But a real conversation isn't a test. No one is grading you — people just want to know what you're trying to say.

Leo

Just want to know what I'm trying to say...

Exactly. When you go shopping and say "how much is this," even if it's not perfect, the shopkeeper gets it and sells it to you — done.

Leo

The shopkeeper doesn't care whether my grammar is right.

He couldn't care less. What he cares about is what you want to buy. If the communication works, it worked.

That really wakes me up. I kept trying to speak perfectly, and ended up not saying anything at all.

That's a lot of people's problem — wanting to get there in one step, to sound like a native the moment they open their mouth.

Leo

And then, because they can't, they just don't speak at all.

Right. Remember this one line: broken Chinese is still a hundred times better than no Chinese.

Leo

Broken Chinese is still a hundred times better than no Chinese. I'm writing that down.

And let me tell you a secret — getting it wrong is actually a good thing.

Leo

Getting it wrong is a good thing?

Yes. When you get it wrong and someone corrects you, or you catch it yourself, you remember that word far better. One mistake beats reviewing it ten times.

Leo

Because that mistake leaves a deep impression.

Exactly. So don't fear mistakes — the moment you make one is when you learn the fastest.

Leo

I always thought mistakes were bad — turns out they're helping me.

Right. Make friends with mistakes instead of fighting them.

Okay, I get the logic. But how do I actually start? I can't just jump straight into a dinner party.

Of course not. We start with the easiest, lowest-pressure thing. Method one — say it out loud.

Leo

Say it out loud? Say what?

Anything. When you watch videos or listen to podcasts, don't just listen — read along out loud, actually say it with your mouth.

Leo

Read along... but I live alone. Won't it feel weird saying it out loud?

Alone at home, no one listening — what's there to fear? The more you only think it silently in your head, the less your mouth will move.

Leo

You mean, for speaking Chinese, my mouth needs training too?

Of course! Speaking uses your lips and tongue — those need practice too. If you only think in your head and never move your mouth, of course it won't cooperate.

Leo

I never thought about it — my mouth needs training too.

Right. There are sounds you can hear a hundred times, but your own mouth can't make them, simply because you've never practiced.

No wonder some words come out wrong. From today on, I'll read along out loud when I watch videos.

Right. This method has a name — "reading along." And there's a next-level version called "shadowing."

Leo

Shadowing? Why "shadow"?

Because you follow right behind someone, like a shadow. They say a line, and you immediately say it too, half a beat behind — like a shadow trailing a person.

Leo

Oh, I hear a line and repeat it right away.

Right, you don't wait for them to finish a whole paragraph — the moment they finish a short line, you jump in. That way your mouth is always moving, always practicing.

Leo

It sounds a little hard, but it seems really useful.

It's totally normal not to keep up at first — you can slow the video down. Little by little, you'll catch up.

Leo

Okay, reading along and shadowing — got it. Anything else?

Method two, you'd never guess it — talk to yourself, and say it out loud.

Leo

Talk to myself?

Right. When you're home alone cooking, walking, or showering, you can talk to yourself in Chinese. What did I do today, what did I see — say it out loud.

Leo

I think I've heard of this — thinking about things in Chinese, right?

Thinking is in your head; what I mean today is different — say it out loud, move your mouth. Thinking in your head is still next door to input; saying it out loud is real output.

Oh, that's the difference. Thinking in your head is one thing, saying it with your mouth is another.

Right. Even at home, talking to your cat in Chinese counts.

Leo

Haha, I don't have a cat — I can talk to my coffee.

Sure! "Good morning, coffee, let's do our best today." See? You just said it out loud.

Leo

Hahaha, okay, tomorrow morning I'll speak Chinese to my coffee.

Method three, also really important — find someone to talk with.

Leo

But I don't have many Chinese speakers around me.

There are lots of options now. Online there are plenty of language partners — you teach them English, they speak Chinese with you, helping each other out.

Leo

A language partner... that's great, teaching English is exactly my strong suit.

Right, you trade what you have for what you want. And talking to a real person is the best cure for your "muteness."

Leo

Why is talking to a real person the most effective?

Because a real person answers you, waits for you, and sometimes doesn't understand you. To make them understand, you have to find a way to get the words out.

Leo

Unlike a video — a video doesn't wait for me, and doesn't need me to reply.

Right. But I know that talking to a real person right away still makes you nervous. So let me teach you one more emergency trick.

Leo

An emergency trick?

Yes. First prepare a few "all-purpose lines," memorize them well, ready to use anytime.

Leo

All-purpose lines? Like what?

Like "Could you say that again?", "What does this word mean?", "My Chinese isn't very good, please speak slower."

Leo

Oh, once I say those, people know how to work with me.

Right. These lines are like your life buoy — the moment you get nervous or freeze, say these first to buy yourself a little time.

Leo

A life buoy — great metaphor. With it, I won't be afraid of falling in the water.

And you'll find that the moment you say "my Chinese isn't very good, please speak slower," the other person won't laugh at you — they'll actually be extra nice.

Leo

Because they know I'm trying hard to learn.

Right. When Chinese people see a foreigner speaking Chinese, most are really happy and will go out of their way to help you.

I've felt that. Last time I said a line of Chinese in a shop, the auntie was so pleased she gave me an extra bun.

Haha, see? Speaking Chinese even gets you buns — how nice.

Leo

For the buns, I've got to speak up more.

One more really important point — don't bottle up big sentences.

Leo

Don't bottle up big sentences?

Right. A lot of people don't dare to speak because they try to build a long, beautiful sentence in their head first, and if they can't, they say nothing.

Leo

Right, that's exactly me — I want to say a whole paragraph, and end up stuck on the first word.

Break that big sentence apart and say it in a few short ones — it's just as clear.

Leo

How do I break it up?

Say you want to say, "Yesterday I'd planned to go to the park but it rained so I didn't go" — that's too long. You can say: "Yesterday I wanted to go to the park. But it rained. So I didn't go."

Leo

Oh, one long sentence becomes three short ones.

Right, short sentences are simple, your mouth flows, and others hear you clearly. First be able to speak, then slowly speak longer.

Leo

First be able to speak, then speak longer. I had that order backwards.

Most people have it backwards. Last, let me teach you a method I especially love — record yourself speaking.

Leo

Record it? Listen to my own voice? I'm a little embarrassed.

Everyone's embarrassed at first. But when you record yourself and listen back, you know which sounds are off and where you're too slow.

Leo

So I become my own teacher.

Right. And when you listen again a month later, you'll notice — hey, I've improved. That's really satisfying.

Leo

I like that — being able to see my own progress.

Leo, after all these methods, the most important thing is still your mindset.

Leo心态?

Mindset?

Right. Treat speaking Chinese as making friends, not as taking a test.

Leo

Making friends versus a test — how are they different?

In a test you fear mistakes; with friends you don't. Chatting with a friend, if you say a word wrong, you both laugh and actually get closer.

Right, when my friends speak English and make mistakes, I find it endearing — I don't look down on them at all.

See? Deep down you already understand this — you just haven't applied it to yourself.

Xiao Yue, I'll remember what you just said. I'm so kind to others — I should be a little kinder to myself too.

Right. Language is for communicating, not performing. As long as you can make others understand you, you've already won.

Leo

As long as I can make others understand me, I've already won.

Let me ask you — last time you called your grandma, were you speaking Chinese the whole time?

Leo

Yes! My grandma doesn't know a word of English, so I could only speak Chinese.

And in that moment, were you afraid of making mistakes?

Strangely, in that moment I wasn't afraid at all. I just wanted her to understand me — I spoke haltingly, and she kept smiling and nodding.

That's exactly it. Because when you talk to your grandma, what's on your mind is "I want her to understand," not "I can't make a mistake."

Leo

Now that you say it, I realize — talking to my grandma is when I speak the most smoothly.

Because in that moment you don't have that "fear of mistakes" wall. There's only your grandma in your heart, not that teacher grading you.

Leo

So I should treat every time I speak Chinese like talking to my grandma.

Right, that's the mindset. Everyone around you can be that grandma who's willing to listen and willing to wait.

Leo

What a great idea. From now on, whenever I get nervous, I'll think of my grandma.

Right. To chat a few more sentences with your grandma, you can climb over any wall.

Xiao Yue, I have one more hang-up. I always feel I speak slower and worse than others.

Who are you comparing yourself to?

Leo

To the foreigners who speak Chinese really well — one comparison and I get so discouraged.

Then you're comparing to the wrong person. Compare yourself to yesterday's you, not to others.

Leo

Compare to yesterday's me...

Right. Today you dare to say three sentences; yesterday you didn't dare say one — that's progress. It has nothing to do with others.

Leo

Thinking that way, I feel a lot less pressure.

The biggest trap in learning a language is comparing yourself to others — the more you compare, the less you dare to speak, and you end up mute again.

Leo

So I should watch my own progress, not how fast others run.

Right. The fact that you came to talk this through with me means you're already moving forward.

Okay, we've covered a lot today — why don't you sum it up and see what stuck.

Okay, I'll try. First, listening and reading are input, speaking and writing are output — I used to only do input, never output.

Right, that's the root of the problem.

Second, understanding and speaking are two different skills — I need to specifically train the "speaking" path.

Mm, go on.

Third, don't fear mistakes. Broken Chinese is still a hundred times better than none, and mistakes make you remember better.

That one's the most important.

For methods, there's reading along and shadowing; when alone, say it out loud and talk to yourself; and find a language partner.

Right, and?

Also prepare a few all-purpose lines as a life buoy, don't bottle up big sentences, use more short ones, and record yourself and listen back.

You remembered it all, wonderful. And the last point?

Last, treat speaking Chinese as making friends, not a test; compare to yesterday's you, not to others. And when I get nervous, think of my grandma.

Full marks! You've basically finished the whole course today.

Actually, I've realized the hardest part today isn't these methods — it's taking that first step and daring to speak.

So true. All the methods only work once you open your mouth first.

Leo

Then I'll try today. I'll start by saying three sentences of Chinese to my coffee, out loud.

Haha, good, start with your coffee. And the day you dare to speak up at a dinner, come back and tell me.

Leo

I will! Next time at that dinner, I won't just sit there nodding.

Okay, let's wrap up here. Have any of you also been a "mute foreign-language" learner?

Yeah — when was your most awkward, or most rewarding, moment speaking up in Chinese? Tell us in the comments.

We'd really love to hear your story — maybe we'll talk about you next episode.

Leo

Then we'll see you next time.

See you next episode. And remember — don't keep your Chinese locked inside; be brave, and say it out loud.
