Last week I went to a language exchange, and someone asked me, "What are your hobbies?"
That is not a hard question. What did you say?
I said, "I like watching movies."
And then?
And then we both looked down at our phones.
Ha, one sentence and the conversation was dead.
I am Xiao Yue. Welcome to today's Simply Natural Chinese.
I am Leo. Today we are talking about how to actually talk about hobbies.
Not memorising a list of hobbies, but keeping the conversation going.
We will also practise asking, answering, and even setting up a next meeting.
Let us start with that sentence. "I like watching movies" is not wrong.
The problem is it is too complete, like a full stop.
Right, when the other person hears a full stop, they do not know if they should ask more.
So they wonder, should I ask what kind of movies?
They might want to ask, but worry about being nosy.
So both people wait, and end up on their phones.
There is another thing: I worry I will say too much.
Afraid of mistakes, or afraid they are not interested?
Both. My Chinese is slow, so I want to answer with the shortest sentence.
And it sounds like you are refusing to chat.
I am not cold, I am just nervous.
I was like that in the UK. People asked about my weekend, I said, "Nothing much."
They must have thought you were mysterious.
No, they thought I was boring.
Ha, so the problem is not the hobby, it is how you say it.
One word is a label; one sentence is a story.
We can remember three moves: add a detail, tell the reason, ask back.
Sounds like three steps, but in real speech it is natural.
Do not rush to memorise. Let us take them one at a time.
Okay, let us start with the easiest: adding a detail.
If I say "I like watching movies," what can you follow with?
I would ask, "What have you seen recently?"
But if I say "I have been watching old movies," you do not have to guess.
Old movies, like black-and-white ones?
Yes, I have been catching up on films from the eighties and nineties.
See, now there is more to go on. I can ask which decade.
Adding a detail means giving a time, place, object, or degree.
Like changing "I like running" to "I run three times a week."
Or "I like cooking" to "I have been learning to bake bread."
Then they know right away how big a part it plays in your life.
One detail is enough. Too many sounds like a report.
What if my hobby is really ordinary, like watching shows?
Ordinary can still be specific: "I am watching a show set in a hospital."
I see. Specific does not mean special; it makes it visible to them.
Right, if they can see it, they can respond.
You can add a feeling, not just a fact.
Like "I could not sleep after it; I kept thinking about the ending."
That paints a picture. I would definitely ask more.
Feelings are easier to talk about than reviews, which are often just good or bad.
Right, if I say "it is good," they can only nod.
If I say "I watched until two in the morning," they will have questions.
Let me try. I have recently gotten into pour-over coffee.
Nice, how many cups do you drink a day?
Two, but since I started studying water temperature, more.
See, three sentences already have time, quantity, and change.
Next is the reason, why you like it?
Yes, reasons usually hide stories, and stories are memorable.
I like running because I want to eat more without worrying about gaining weight.
That is honest and funny.
My friends always say, "Then you have earned that food."
One of my hobbies is taking photos of my cat.
Your calico cat, Xiao Hua, right?
Yes. I started because she always sleeps in strange places.
Like in a cake box?
Once she slept on a flour bag and turned completely white.
That is way more interesting than "I like photography."
And the other person will automatically share their own cat or dog.
So giving a reason is actually giving them a way in.
Ask yourself three things: how it started, when it made you happiest, and whether it changed.
How it started. I have never thought about that.
Think about it. How did your coffee thing start?
When I first came to Hangzhou, I could not sleep, so I started drinking coffee every day.
And when did it become more than just staying awake?
Once I ground beans myself, smelled it, and suddenly felt calm.
That is a story. It has warmth that "I like coffee" does not.
Step three is asking back, right?
Yes, but not like a background check, one question after another.
A background check, like asking age, job, address?
Ha, yes, that makes people want to run.
So how do you ask naturally?
First respond to what they said, then ask something related.
If they like running, I say, "I run too, but I am slow."
Then ask, "Where do you usually run?"
So they hear the common ground first, then answer the place.
Common ground is not always the same activity, it can be the same feeling.
Like we both like quiet places?
Yes, or we both lose interest after three minutes. That counts too.
Speaking of that, I learned guitar for only a month.
I tried flower arranging, quit after two lessons.
Then we can start a quitting club.
Ha, that club would disband quickly.
But seriously, after finding common ground, what is next?
Be specific, like "let us go together sometime."
Not the polite "let us eat sometime when you are free"?
Right, give a time, place, or activity. Do not just say "when you are free."
I am curious, do hobbies have to last a long time?
Not necessarily. You try to know, and quitting is not shameful.
But when people ask about my hobbies, I worry I am not good enough.
A hobby is not an exam; it does not need a certificate.
If I say I just play around, does it sound like I do not care?
It is fine. Just do not put yourself down.
I see. Beginner and expert are levels, not qualifications.
And people's hobbies change. That is normal.
I used to love gaming; now I prefer walking outside.
Is it because work is tiring and you want to get away from screens?
Yes, maybe I am getting older and cannot sit still.
I learned piano as a kid, stopped, then picked it up again last year.
After so long, can you still play?
I forgot a lot, but relearning it is more fun than before.
Why was it not fun before?
Before it was for exams; now I just play for myself.
So the same hobby feels different with a different purpose.
Right. Also, hobbies take time and money.
That is real. I was shocked when I bought my coffee gear.
You can be honest: "I spend two hundred yuan a month on it."
Does that sound too petty?
No, it lets people know your real situation.
What if they say, "That is too expensive"?
Say, "I know, so I only kept the part I like most."
That is a solid answer. No over-explaining, no getting defensive.
Let us put together some useful phrases you can use directly.
Okay, first: how do you say you just started?
"I just started learning, still a beginner."
How do you say you really like it, a deeper level?
"I am a bit obsessed lately; I spend weekends doing it."
Is "obsessed" much stronger than "like"?
Yes, and "addicted," though that is sometimes a joke.
Like "I am already addicted to coffee."
Ha, you can say that, just not to a doctor.
How do you say you only do it occasionally?
"I do it when I have time, not that often."
What if they ask whether you are good at it?
Say, "Still practising, not brave enough to perform yet."
Got it, "not brave enough to perform" sounds natural.
One more: "I am average, just doing it for fun."
"For fun." I really like that phrase.
It moves the focus from skill level to how it feels.
What if I want to ask them to teach me?
Say, "Can I join you next time? I would like to learn."
"Join you" sounds much lighter than "teach me."
Okay, three quick practices. I say a line, you respond.
Let us go, I am ready.
First: I say, "I like running."
I would say, "Where do you usually run, morning or evening?"
Good, you did not just say "oh," you asked something specific.
What if I want to add my own detail?
Say, "I run too, but usually only on weekends."
Got it: common ground first, then my own situation. Give me three seconds.
Okay, three seconds. Now you say, "I like cooking."
"I have been learning to bake bread, but it often comes out too hard."
Great line. It has a detail and a real difficulty.
Your turn to respond. What would you ask? Give me three seconds.
I would ask, "Which kind of bread do you like making most?"
Then I would say, "I like making toast bread, it is convenient in the morning."
Right, that keeps it going without memorised answers.
Last one: what if they say, "I do not really have hobbies"? Three seconds.
I would say, "That is okay, what do you usually do on weekends?"
That is gentle. It does not make them feel strange.
Because hobbies are not a required question; daily life works too.
I get it. The point is curiosity, not inspection.
Let us go back to the beginning and try that question again.
Okay: "What hobbies do you have?"
"I like movies; lately I have been catching up on eighties and nineties films."
Oh, why that era?
Because the cities in them feel slow. They calm me down.
Sounds nice. I have been looking for something to slow myself down too.
See, this time we did not look at our phones.
And we already got to the next step.
So remember: add a detail, give a reason, ask back.
It does not have to be perfect, just give them a way forward.
