Hey everyone! Welcome to a new episode of Simply Natural Chinese! I'm Tian Tian!

Hey everyone, I'm A-Jie.

A-Jie, I gotta tell you, I've been so stressed out lately.

What's wrong? Are your finals not over yet?

Exams are almost done, but I've got an even bigger worry now.

What's bugging you?

Summer break's coming up, and I wanna find an internship, but I have no idea where to start.

Oh, looking for an internship? I totally feel you on that.

Was it really hard for you back then too?

It wasn't just hard — it was a total nightmare.

Then tell me all about it so I can get a head start.

Sure, let's talk about interviews today — from submitting resumes to the actual interview, I'll tell you everything I know.

Great! Let's start with resumes — I haven't even written mine yet.

You're a sophomore now. Have you done any part-time jobs or joined any activities before?

I have done part-time work — I worked at a bubble tea shop near campus and was vice president of a school club.

You can put all of that on there. A lot of students think they have no experience and their resume is empty, but if you really think about it, there's actually quite a bit to write.

But working at a bubble tea shop — wouldn't that look too basic?

Not at all. Don't underestimate these experiences — it's all about how you phrase it. For the tea shop, you could write "handled customer service and independently managed orders and preparation during peak hours."

Wow, with that kind of spin, it sounds so professional.

Right, a resume is about presenting what you've done in a more professional way. But be careful not to exaggerate too much, or when they ask you for details in the interview, you won't be able to answer and it'll be awkward.

Got it — polish it up a bit, but don't make stuff up.

Exactly. And one more important thing — keep your resume to one page.

One page? Isn't that way too short?

For an intern, one page is plenty. HR has to go through hundreds of resumes every day — they don't have time to read slowly. If yours is too long, they might just skip right over it.

Alright, I'd better trim it down then. Oh, I've seen people online say you should mass-apply — just send your resume everywhere, the more the better. What do you think?

Mass-applying, well, how do I put it — there are pros and cons. The upside is more opportunities, but the downside is you might apply to a hundred companies with the exact same resume and zero personalization.

So what should I do?

The best approach is to pick a few companies you really want to work at, tailor your resume to highlight relevant experience for those positions, and then mass-apply for the rest.

So use a customized version for top-choice companies and a generic one for the others?

Yep, that's the most efficient way.

What about after you submit? I've applied to some companies days ago and haven't heard back at all.

That's totally normal. The most painful part of applying is the waiting. You send it off, and then — nothing. Just left on read.

Being left on read is the worst — it's like texting your crush and getting completely ignored.

Haha, pretty much. But don't lose heart — a lot of big companies have slow processes. Sometimes it takes a week or two to get back to you, and that's totally normal.

What if they never reply?

Then most likely you didn't make the cut. But it's fine — just keep applying to others. With job hunting, rejection is the norm. Getting an interview invite is the pleasant surprise.

Alright, I'll brace myself. Speaking of interviews, that's what scares me the most.

What are you scared of?

Getting nervous! I'm the kind of person who can't stop talking with friends, but the second it's a formal setting, my mind just goes completely blank.

That's super normal — almost everyone gets nervous at their first interview. I remember for my first one, the interviewer asked me to introduce myself. I'd prepared this whole speech, but the second I sat down, everything just vanished from my head.

So what did you do?

I just forced myself to say "Hi, I'm A-Jie, I'm here for the interview," and then I had no idea what to say next.

Hahaha, that must've been so awkward!

Yeah, I wished the ground would just open up and swallow me.

So how did you eventually get over the nervousness?

Just do more interviews and you'll be fine. Honestly, interviews are like exams — the more you practice, the less scary they get.

But I haven't even had my first one yet. How do I practice?

You can start by practicing in front of a mirror, memorize your self-introduction, and then get a friend to do a mock interview with you.

Mock interview?

Yeah, have a friend play the interviewer, they ask questions and you answer. Do that a few times and you won't panic as much in the real thing.

That's a great idea. I'll get my roommate to practice with me.

Here's another little trick — take a few deep breaths before the interview and tell yourself "the worst that can happen is I don't get it, and that's no big deal."

Easier said than done. But I'll give it a shot.

By the way, do you know what kind of questions they usually ask in interviews?

Self-introduction for sure, right?

Yep, self-introduction is pretty much guaranteed. On top of that, there are a few classic questions.

Like what?

Things like "Why do you want to work at our company?", "What are your strengths and weaknesses?", and "What's a challenge you've faced and how did you handle it?"

Ugh, those questions sound simple but they're really hard to answer. Strengths are fine, but how do you talk about weaknesses? You can't exactly say "my biggest weakness is having no weaknesses," right?

Haha, someone's actually said that before. When talking about weaknesses, mention a real one, but add how you're working on improving it.

Like what?

For example, you could say "Sometimes I focus too much on details, which slows me down, but I'm learning how to prioritize better."

Oh, so frame the weakness as not too fatal while showing you're making progress.

Exactly, that's the game of interviewing.

What about "Why do you want to work at our company?"

For this one, whatever you do, don't say "because your salary is high" or "because you're close to my house."

Haha, but isn't that the honest truth?

True as it may be, an interview isn't the place for brutal honesty. You want to talk about things related to the company's culture and direction.

Like "I really admire your company's mission" and stuff like that?

Right, but be specific about it. Before the interview, make sure you research the company — check their website, their social media, learn what they've been up to recently, and then bring that up during the interview.

That way it shows you actually care about the company instead of just randomly applying.

Exactly, interviewers can tell right away whether you've done your homework.

Okay, noted. Are there any weird questions? I've heard some interviewers ask really strange stuff.

Oh, there are tons of weird ones. Once in an interview, the interviewer asked me "If you were an animal, what would you be?"

What? Is that an interview or a brain teaser?

I was stunned too. But after thinking for a second, I said "I think I'm like an ant, because ants are hardworking and great at teamwork."

Haha, that's a pretty clever answer. How did the interviewer react?

He smiled and moved on to the next question. Honestly, there's no right answer to questions like that — the interviewer just wants to see how you think on your feet.

What if I said "I think I'm like a cat because I'm independent?"

That works too — the key is that you can back it up.

What if I said "I'm like a sloth?"

Then you can kiss that job goodbye.

Hahaha! Okay okay. Oh right, I've also heard about something called a group interview — is that where several people interview together?

Yep, a group interview is when several candidates interview at the same time. Everyone sits together discussing a topic while the interviewer observes from the side.

So you have to fight to get a word in?

A lot of people do fight for airtime, but that actually backfires. In a group interview, it's not about who talks the most — it's about who says something worthwhile.

So what's the best way to stand out?

First, really listen to what others are saying. Then chime in at the right moment with your own point, ideally building on what someone else said. If you can do the wrap-up summary, that's bonus points.

So it's about showing teamwork, not putting on a one-person show.

Right, group interviews test what role you play in a team. You can be the leader, the contributor, the mediator — just don't be the person who sits there saying nothing.

Got it. What about video interviews? A lot of companies do those now, right?

Yeah, especially for the first round, a lot of companies use video interviews.

Anything to watch out for with video interviews?

First, make sure your background isn't a mess. You don't want the interviewer seeing piles of clothes and snacks behind you.

Guess I'd better clean up my dorm room first.

Second, your internet has to be solid. Imagine the interviewer asks you a crucial question, you're about to answer, and suddenly the video freezes — that's a total performance killer.

Too real — our dorm WiFi is pretty unreliable.

One more thing — dress properly for video interviews too. Just because you're at home doesn't mean you can wear pajamas. At least dress formally from the waist up.

Formal on top, whatever on the bottom?

In theory, sure. But what if you need to stand up in the middle of it?

Haha, fine, I'll dress properly head to toe. Speaking of clothes, what should I actually wear to an interview? It's not like I'm interviewing at a bank — do I need a suit?

It depends on the type of company. For tech companies or startups, you usually don't need to dress too formally — clean and neat is fine. But for finance or law, you'd better dress more professionally.

I'm looking for an operations internship at a tech company — what should I wear?

Just wear a clean button-up shirt or T-shirt with jeans or casual pants. That'll do.

That easy?

Internship interviews don't need to be too formal. But one thing — don't wear flip-flops, don't let your hair be a mess, and keep your nails trimmed. Interviewers notice these details.

Right right, pay attention to details. Anything else to watch out for during the interview?

There are a few big no-nos. First, don't be late.

I know that one — arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.

Right. Second, never badmouth a previous job or boss.

I haven't even worked before — I've got no boss to badmouth.

Just keep it in mind for the future. Third, don't ask about salary right at the end of the interview.

What? Something as important as salary, and you don't ask?

It's not that you can't ask, but don't rush to bring it up in the first round. Usually the interviewer will bring up salary at the right time. If they haven't mentioned it by the final round, then it's fine to ask.

What does the interviewer usually say before wrapping up?

They usually ask "Do you have any questions for me?"

What should I ask at that point?

You can ask work-related questions, like "What does this intern position mainly involve day to day?", "How big is the team?", or "Are there opportunities to learn and grow?"

What if the interviewer says "go home and wait for our notice?"

Ha, that's the most classic line in the entire interview world.

What does it mean?

On the surface it means "wait for our call," but in reality, a lot of the time it's just a polite way of saying no.

That's so harsh!

It's not 100% of the time. Some companies genuinely need to follow their process and will actually get back to you. But if a week or two goes by with no word, then it's pretty much a no.

Should I call them to ask?

You can wait three to five business days, then send a polite email to ask about the progress. Don't call — calling makes you look too eager.

Okay, I'll remember that. But going back to my worry — what if I'm so nervous during the interview that I literally can't speak?

You can just tell the interviewer "Sorry, I'm a little nervous."

Wouldn't that make me look unprofessional?

Not at all. Most interviewers will understand, especially since you're an intern — their expectations aren't that high. Plus, being upfront about it is actually better than sitting there stumbling over your words.

Good point. A-Jie, do you still get nervous at interviews now?

Honestly, a little bit. But way less than before. And I've realized that a healthy amount of nervousness is actually a good thing — it means you take it seriously.

That makes me feel a lot better. So what do you think is the most important thing about an internship? The pay?

Pay matters, of course, but for your first internship, what you learn matters more than what you earn.

But how do you survive without money?

I know, internship pay is usually low. But think about it — what's the purpose of an internship? It's to gain some work experience before graduation, to figure out what you like and what suits you.

So an internship isn't just about working for money — it's more like a chance to try things out and learn from mistakes.

Exactly. My first internship paid really little, but I learned how to work with colleagues, write proposals, and handle meetings there. You can't learn that stuff in school.

How did you land your first internship?

Through an internal referral.

What's an internal referral?

It's when someone inside a company refers you. Like if you know older students working at a company, they can send your resume directly to HR.

Is the success rate higher than applying on your own?

Way higher. With a referral, HR will at least give your resume a serious look instead of just skipping past it.

Then I need to hurry up and ask my seniors if there are any openings.

Yeah, connections really matter at this stage. You can ask around in your school group chats or look on social media.

Speaking of social media, I've seen a lot of people sharing interview tips on Xiaohongshu.

Interview tips are definitely worth reading, but don't copy them word for word. Every company has its own interview style, and every interviewer focuses on different things.

So what good are they?

They help you get a sense of what types of questions a company might ask, so you have a general idea. But your answers should always come from your own real experiences and thoughts.

Got it — they're a reference, not an answer key.

Right. And one more piece of advice — after every interview, regardless of the outcome, do a review of how it went.

A review? Like looking back at what went well and what didn't?

Exactly. Like if you didn't answer a question well today, think about how you'd answer a similar one next time. That way you improve with every interview.

Great approach — treat every interview as a learning experience.

Exactly. When you think about it, an interview is really just two people having a conversation — one asking questions and the other answering. Don't build up the interviewer as some scary figure in your head.

But some interviewers are really intimidating. I've heard there's something called a stress interview.

Stress interviews do exist. The interviewer deliberately puts you under pressure — like constantly questioning your answers or acting really cold.

What are they testing?

Your ability to handle pressure. The interviewer wants to see if you can stay calm under stress and express yourself clearly.

What do I do if that happens to me? I won't actually start crying, will I?

Whatever you do, don't cry. Tell yourself it's just a format of interviewing — the interviewer isn't actually targeting you personally. Stay calm and answer as you normally would.

Alright, I'll mentally prepare myself.

Most internship interviews won't use stress tactics, so don't worry too much.

That's a relief. A-Jie, after all your interviews, do you have any particularly memorable experiences?

Yeah. I remember one interview where after I answered a question, the interviewer suddenly said "I completely disagree with what you just said."

Whoa, what did you do?

My heart skipped a beat, but I didn't rush to argue back or change my answer. I took a few seconds, then said "I understand your perspective, but my view comes from a particular experience. That said, I'd love to hear your take on it."

That answer is so smooth!

It's not being slippery — it's respecting the other person while standing your ground. The interviewer later told me he did it on purpose to see if I'd panic the moment someone pushed back.

So interviews are full of mind games.

Not all mind games, but you should be mentally prepared that the interviewer might test you from all sorts of angles.

I'm starting to feel like interviews aren't that scary after all. At the end of the day, it's about showing the real you, right?

Yes, that's the most important thing. Don't pretend to be someone else just to please the interviewer. Even if your acting gets you the job, you'll be exhausted keeping it up afterwards.

That makes sense. If a company doesn't like the real me, then it's not the right fit anyway.

Exactly. An interview is a two-way street — the company is choosing you, but you're also choosing the company.

Well said! So to wrap up, give me a summary of what I need to prepare before an interview.

First, nail your resume — one page, highlight the key points. Second, research the company beforehand so you're not clueless. Third, prepare your self-introduction and answers to common questions. Fourth, dress neatly and appropriately. Fifth, relax your mindset — being nervous is totally normal.

Alright, I'm starting on my resume tonight!

Go for it! Hit me up anytime if you have questions.

Thanks, A-Jie! Oh, if I pass my interview, how about I treat you to dinner?

Then you'd better prepare well — I'll be waiting for that dinner.
