Hello everyone! I'm Xiaoyue! Welcome to today's episode of Simply Natural Chinese!

Leo大家好!我是 Leo。

Hello everyone! I'm Leo.

Xiaoyue: Leo, I noticed you've been looking at your phone this whole time. Were you looking something up?

Leo: Yes, Xiaoyue. I was hoping you could help me. My colleague invited me to dinner at their house, but I'm a bit nervous.

Xiaoyue: Going to a colleague's home for dinner is a good thing, right? What are you nervous about?

Leo: I'm worried because I don't know much about Chinese table manners. I'm afraid I'll do something wrong and make a bad impression.

Xiaoyue: Oh, that's what it is! You're worried about table etiquette, right?

Leo: Yes, exactly! I've heard there are quite a lot of dining rules in China. I'm afraid I'll mess up, so I've been searching online.

Xiaoyue: Haha, I can tell you some so you can prepare in advance.

Leo

Leo: Great! Tell me quickly, what do I need to pay attention to?

Xiaoyue: Don't rush. Let's talk it through slowly. It's actually not that hard. Just remember a few key points.

Leo

Leo: Okay, I'm ready.

Xiaoyue: Okay, let's start with seating. First of all, where you sit matters.

Leo

Leo: Where to sit? Are all seats different?

Xiaoyue: Yes. If it's a square table or a more formal setting, the head seat is very important. The head seat is the one facing the door, reserved for elders or the host.

Leo

Leo: Oh, so I can't just sit wherever I want?

Xiaoyue: Exactly! You're a guest. Never sit in the seat facing the door. That would be very rude.

Leo

Leo: Got it. So where should I sit?

Xiaoyue: Generally, the host will tell you where to sit. Just follow their lead. If nobody says anything, pick a seat near the edge.

Leo

Leo: Okay, I'll remember that. What about a round table?

Xiaoyue: With a round table, you can relax! The round table is meant to make everyone feel equal. There aren't as many seating rules. You can sit wherever.

Leo

Leo: That's a relief. I hope their table is round.

Xiaoyue: The round table is designed to make people feel at ease, so don't worry too much about seating.

Leo

Leo: What about after you sit down? Can you start eating right away?

Xiaoyue: No, you can't. After sitting down, you need to wait for the elders or the host to start eating first. Then you can eat.

Leo

Leo: Oh, I know this one. The West has the same rule — you wait for the host to say "please enjoy."

Xiaoyue: Yes, exactly, it's similar. In China, you watch whether the elders or host have started. Once they pick up their chopsticks, you do the same.

Leo

Leo: What if I'm really hungry?

Xiaoyue: You can sip some tea, or chat with the person next you, to take your mind off it.

Leo

Leo: Okay, I'll remember that. Is there anything to note when you first start eating?

Xiaoyue: Yes! When you start, try to take food from near yourself. Don't reach across the table right away.

Leo

Leo: Haha, I get that.

Xiaoyue: Right. And when you pick something up, do it steadily. Don't pick something up and then put it back, or keep picking and choosing. That's impolite.

Leo

Leo: Is it bad to pick something up and then put it back?

Xiaoyue: Of course! If you pick something up, it means you intend to eat it. Putting it back — how is anyone else supposed to eat it? That's very rude.

Leo

Leo: That makes sense. What else should I watch out for when using chopsticks?

Xiaoyue: First, never stick your chopsticks vertically into your rice bowl.

Leo

Leo: Why? Isn't it convenient to leave them like that?

Xiaoyue: It may be convenient, but sticking chopsticks upright looks like burning incense at an altar — very unlucky. If you do that at someone's home, the host will be very unhappy.

Leo

Leo: Oh my, I didn't know that. Thank goodness you told me.

Xiaoyue: Second, never tap your chopsticks against the bowl.

Leo

Leo: Tap the bowl?

Xiaoyue: Some people play around by tapping their chopsticks on the bowl, but that gesture looks like a beggar asking for food. It's very rude.

Leo

Leo: I didn't realize that. Learning something new every day.

Xiaoyue: Third, never point at people with your chopsticks.

Leo

Leo: Point with chopsticks?

Xiaoyue: When you're eating, you usually chat. And as you chat, it's easy to start gesturing with your chopsticks. That's very impolite.

Leo: I can imagine. It's not good indeed. And the chopsticks could easily poke someone. I'll be careful.

Xiaoyue: Fourth, don't dig around in the dishes.

Leo: I've seen that! Some people like to dig around looking for what they want to eat. It's really uncomfortable to watch.

Xiaoyue: Right! It's unhygienic and comes across as selfish. Take food from the top, eat what you get, don't go "treasure hunting."

Leo

Leo: Haha, "treasure hunting" is such a vivid description! I'll remember it.

Xiaoyue: Okay, let's talk about the lazy susan next.

Leo

Leo: The lazy susan is that big round plate on the round table that rotates, right?

Xiaoyue: Yes, many Chinese families use round tables with a rotating plate to make it easier for everyone to reach the dishes.

Leo

Leo: I know, you rotate it and the dish comes in front of you.

Xiaoyue: Right. But be careful — never rotate it while someone is taking food!

Leo

Leo: Oh, I never thought about that.

Xiaoyue: Some people are impatient. They see a dish they want and immediately try to spin it around, not noticing that someone else is in the middle of taking food.

Leo

Leo: That would be really bad. If someone's in the middle of taking food and you spin the plate, the food could fall off.

Xiaoyue: Exactly! And it's very rude. It shows you only think about yourself and don't respect others.

Leo

Leo: What's the correct way to do it?

Xiaoyue: Before spinning, look around first. Make sure no one is taking food, then slowly turn it. Don't spin it fast.

Leo

Leo: Got it. The lazy susan etiquette is about mutual respect, right?

Xiaoyue: Exactly! Table etiquette is all about making everyone comfortable.

Leo

Leo: Is there anything else to watch out for?

Xiaoyue: Let's talk about toasting. Toasting is very important at Chinese dining tables.

Leo

Leo: I know a bit about toasting, but I'm not much of a drinker. What should I do?

Xiaoyue: It doesn't matter if you can't drink. What matters is the courtesy. If someone toasts you, stand up to show respect.

Leo

Leo: Okay, I know that part. Then what?

Xiaoyue: When clinking glasses, your glass should be lower than the other person's, especially if they're an elder or the host.

Leo

Leo: Why does it need to be lower?

Xiaoyue: It's a sign of respect for the other person.

Leo

Leo: I see! What about between people the same age?

Xiaoyue: You don't need to be so strict among peers, but if you want to be extra polite, having yours slightly lower is fine too.

Leo

Leo: Got it. How do I politely decline alcohol?

Xiaoyue: You can say "I can't really drink, I'll use tea instead," and then raise your teacup. A lot of people will understand these days.

Leo

Leo: Tea instead of wine, great idea! What if they say "随意"?

Xiaoyue: Hahaha, "随意" doesn't mean you can really skip drinking! It means drink at your own pace — as much as you can handle — but you should still have some.

Leo

Leo: Got it. "随意" is just polite talk.

Xiaoyue: Right. There are a lot of pleasantries at Chinese dining tables. You need to learn to understand what they really mean.

Leo

Leo: Okay. Anything else?

Xiaoyue: When drinking soup, try not to make loud noises. It's better to be quiet about it when you're at someone's home.

Leo

Leo: I get that. It's the same in Western dining.

Xiaoyue: Right. Also pay attention when eating — keep your mouth closed while chewing. Don't make loud noises.

Leo

Leo: My grandma told me that when I was a kid.

Xiaoyue: Exactly! Another important point — don't talk when you have food in your mouth.

Leo

Leo: Why?

Xiaoyue: Because you might spray food when you talk. It looks bad and it's not hygienic. Finish what's in your mouth first, then talk.

Leo

Leo: That makes sense. I've seen people talking while eating, and it's really not good.

Xiaoyue: Right, these small details matter. Also, try not to leave any grains of rice in your bowl when you're done.

Leo

Leo: I know that. "Every grain comes from hardship."

Xiaoyue: Haha, exactly! Wasting food is not good, and finishing your meal shows you really enjoyed what the host prepared.

Leo

Leo: What if the host asks me if I'm full? How should I answer?

Xiaoyue: If you're full, just say "I'm full, thank you." If you're still hungry, you can say "The food is so delicious, I'd like some more."

Leo

Leo: Got it! What if the host keeps putting food on my plate?

Xiaoyue: That's the host being hospitable. If you can't eat any more, politely say "Thank you, I'm already full."

Leo

Leo: Okay, got it. What about conversation at the table — is there anything I shouldn't talk about?

Xiaoyue: Good question! First of all, don't ask about private matters like income or salary.

Leo

Leo: I know that. Same in the West.

Xiaoyue: Also questions about marriage, why you're not married, or when you're having kids — best to avoid those.

Leo

Leo: Those questions are really awkward. I'll steer clear of them.

Xiaoyue: Also, don't speak badly of others. That will make the host think badly of you.

Leo

Leo: Got it. The dining table is for chatting, not for complaining.

Xiaoyue: Right! You can compliment the host's cooking, or talk about light topics like work, travel, or hobbies.

Leo

Leo: Okay, I can definitely compliment the food. Chinese food really is delicious.

Xiaoyue: Hahaha, you'll be fine eating at your colleague's place!

Leo: That really puts me at ease. But what if I make a mistake?

Xiaoyue: What matters most is your attitude. If you realize you've made a mistake, apologize right away — say "Sorry, I'm not familiar with this custom." Since you haven't lived in China for long, everyone will understand.

Leo

Leo: Got it. Honesty is important.

Xiaoyue: Right. As long as you're polite and warm, everything else is a minor issue.

Leo

Leo: Thank you, Xiaoyue, for telling me all this. I feel much more confident now.

Xiaoyue: You're welcome! The core of table etiquette is really about respecting others and being considerate.

Leo

Leo: You're right. What matters isn't these rules themselves, but mutual respect.

Xiaoyue: Exactly! Go to your colleague's dinner with a sincere heart, and you'll surely make a good impression.

Leo

Leo: Okay, I'm ready! I'll do my best.

Xiaoyue: Go for it! Tell me how it went when you get back!

Leo

Leo: Definitely! Thank you, Xiaoyue. I learned so much today.

Xiaoyue: Hahaha, don't mention it. Hope you have a great meal!
