Symptoms: 不舒服 (bù shū fu, feel unwell), 发烧 (fā shāo, fever), 头疼 (tóu téng, headache), 嗓子疼 (sǎng zi téng, sore throat), 感冒 (gǎn mào, a cold).; At a Chinese hospital: 挂号 (guà hào, register), 内科 (nèi kē, internal medicine), 排队 (pái duì, queue), 叫号 (jiào hào, call the number), 单子 (dān zi, slip).; Seeing the doctor: 看病 (kàn bìng, see a doctor), 医生 (yī shēng, doctor), 检查 (jiǎn chá, check-up), 量体温 (liáng tǐ wēn, take temperature), 张开嘴 (zhāng kāi zuǐ, open your mouth).
I rarely get sick. But this morning, the moment I got up, I felt really unwell. My head ached a little, my throat hurt too, and I had no energy at all. Today I'll speak a little slowly, so you can listen and learn Chinese with me.
I took my temperature — ah, I had a slight fever. Home alone, I felt a little miserable. I thought, I'd better go to the hospital and see a doctor.
I slowly got dressed and headed out the door. The hospital isn't far from my home, just a few bus stops away. It was a bit cold, so I put on an extra coat.
At the hospital, I didn't go straight to a doctor. In China, before you see a doctor, you first have to register. I walked over to the registration desk and waited in line.
When it was my turn, I said: I'd like to see internal medicine. After registering, I got a slip, with my name on it. Next, I could go and see the doctor.
There were many patients, so I had to wait a bit. I sat on a chair, watching the screen in front of me. The screen calls out numbers; when it calls mine, it's my turn.
After a while, the screen called my name. I stood up and walked into the doctor's room. The doctor was sitting there, and with a smile asked me to sit.
The doctor asked me: What is bothering you? I said: My head hurts, I have a slight fever, and my throat hurts too. The doctor listened and nodded.
The doctor had me open my mouth and looked at my throat, and took my temperature again. After the check-up, the doctor said: It is just a common cold, nothing to worry about.
The doctor said: No need for a shot, just take some medicine. After you get home, drink plenty of warm water and rest a lot. Hearing this, I felt much more at ease.
The doctor prescribed the medicine on the computer. After seeing the doctor, I took the slip and went to pay first. In China, you pay first before you can get the medicine.
After paying, I went to the hospital pharmacy to pick up my medicine. There, I got my own medicine. The label said: take it three times a day, after meals. I made sure to remember it.
With the medicine in hand, I could finally go home. Though my body felt a bit tired, after seeing the doctor, I felt much more relieved. When you are sick, it is so nice to have someone help you.
Back home, I first poured a big cup of hot water, and took my medicine just as the doctor said. Then I tucked myself in under the blanket, and lay down for a good rest.
When you are sick, sleep is the best medicine. I drank lots of hot water, turned off the light, and slowly fell asleep.
The next morning, the moment I woke up, I felt so much better. My head no longer hurt, and the fever was gone. I touched my forehead — nice and cool. What a relief!
I slowly got up and made myself a bowl of warm congee. I felt better day by day, and my mood got better and better too.
Actually, being sick is not so scary. See a doctor, take your medicine, rest well, and you will get better soon.
Alright, that is all for today. Thank you for coming to see the doctor with me. And please take good care of yourself — it is getting cold, so remember to dress warmly. See you next time!
