You've been learning Chinese for a long time, so why can't you speak yet? Are there so many words in your heart that just won't come out? Don't be sad. I'm Xiao Yue. I run a tiny cake shop in Hangzhou. Today, I want to tell you a story of my own.
First, I want to tell you, this is not your fault. It really isn't. It's not that you're not smart, and it's not that you haven't worked hard. Don't worry, so many people are like this. I was like this too. When I was learning English, I was just the same.
When I was in school, I studied English for many years. Six years, seven years, many years. I had English class every day. I could write, read, and do exercises. On tests, I did pretty well. My teacher even said, Xiao Yue studies so well. But speaking? I'm sorry, I couldn't speak. I had so many English words in my head, but they wouldn't come out. My mouth didn't feel like my own mouth.
Later, I opened this little cake shop. Every day I bake cakes and sell cakes, and I love it. One afternoon, I was alone in the shop. A foreign customer walked in, wanting to buy a cake. He asked me in English, what is this cake? Such a simple question! I wanted to say, it's a fruit cake, I made it this morning. But I just stood there, my face bright red, and I couldn't say a single word.
In the end, I showed him the cake with my hand, and gave a little smile. He bought the cake and left. That night, I sat at home feeling really sad. My cat Xiao Hua sat beside me. I asked her, after all those years of studying, why can't I speak?
I thought for a long time, and slowly I understood. It's not that I'm not smart. I just listened too little. Look at little kids. They listen first. They listen to mom, listen to dad, listen so, so much, and only then do they start to talk. Nobody makes little kids do exercises, right? But every little kid learns to talk. Listen first, then speak. That's how everyone learns to talk.
Okay, now let me ask you a question. These past few minutes, what have you been doing? Think about it. Right, you're listening. You're listening to me speak Chinese. I speak very slowly, and you understand a lot, right? What you're doing right now is the best method! A method is how you do something. See, you're not using a book, not doing exercises, you're learning Chinese with your ears. This road is the right road.
Back then, that's when I changed my method. My new method was simple, just two little words: listen more. Listen, listen a lot, a little bit every day. If a method is too hard, I can't stick to it. But this method, I can do every single day.
Every morning, before I bake, I sit down first, drink a glass of water, and listen for ten minutes. My phone sits on the table, and when ten minutes are up, I go make my cakes. Ten minutes is short, so I can do it every day.
What do I listen to? Simple things, things I can understand. I listened to very, very slow English, to children's stories, to people talking about food, about shopping, about the weather. If it's too hard and I can't understand it, I skip it. One story, I listen to it many times. The first time, I understand half. The third time, I understand a lot. The fifth time, I understand it all. Only things you can understand really help you.
I listen while walking to the shop, and I listen while baking. Hands making cakes, ears listening. When there aren't many customers, I listen a little more in the shop. Ten minutes a day is enough.
Don't rush, take it slow. Ten minutes every day beats two hours in one day. It's just like baking cakes. You can't bake a hundred cakes in one day and then nothing for a month. Bake a little every day, and your hands remember. Chinese is the same, listen a little every day, and your ears will remember.
Sometimes you'll feel like you're not getting better. One day, two days, nothing seems to change. Don't worry, it's okay. It's like a little tree. You watch it every day, and you can't see it growing. But it's growing every single day. Your ears are just the same.
Three months later, something interesting happened. A lot of English, I didn't even have to think, I just understood. Another month or two later, some words just jumped out of my mouth on their own. Even I had to laugh. When did they get in there? I have no idea.
Now, when foreign customers come to the shop, I can talk with them in English, slowly. Sometimes I still make mistakes. Once I said one word wrong, but the customer understood, and we both laughed. He even taught me slowly, I repeated it once, and it stuck. One mistake, one word remembered.
Don't be afraid of mistakes. Making mistakes is learning. My friend Leo is learning Chinese too. He makes mistakes all the time. But he speaks every day. Say it wrong, smile, and say it again. Now his Chinese is getting better and better. Mistakes are not scary. Never opening your mouth, that's scary.
Sometimes I speak English to Xiao Hua at home. That's my practice. Practice means doing something again and again. Xiao Hua doesn't understand, but she doesn't laugh at me, she just watches me. Little by little, I stopped being afraid.
So if you can't speak Chinese yet, don't be sad, don't rush. Listen first. Listen to simple things you understand, a little every day. Tired? Take a rest. Forgot something? Just listen again. When your ears have heard enough, your mouth will slowly open.
Finally, I want to tell you one thing. Today I said all this in Chinese, and you understood it. That is progress. Progress means being a little better today than yesterday. See? You're already on your way. Don't rush, take it slow. We'll walk this road together.
