Gentle encouragement you'll hear everywhere: 别急 (bié jí, don't rush), 慢慢来 (màn màn lái, take it slow), 别怕 (bié pà, don't be afraid), 没关系 (méi guān xi, it's okay), 放轻松 (fàng qīng sōng, relax).; Tea words for the senses: 泡茶 (pào chá, to brew tea), 茶叶 (chá yè, tea leaves), 热水 (rè shuǐ, hot water), 味道 (wèi dào, flavor), 香 (xiāng, fragrant).; Talking about learning: 慢慢地 (màn màn de, slowly), 一直学下去 (yì zhí xué xià qù, keep on learning), 记住 (jì zhù, to remember), 每天一点 (měi tiān yì diǎn, a little every day), 一样 (yí yàng, the same).
I brewed a cup of tea and set it on the table. I didn't drink it right away — I'm waiting for it. You might ask: waiting for what? Good tea can't be rushed; you wait for it slowly.
I'm Xiao Yue, and I run a tiny little dessert shop. Today, I'm not making you a cake. I want to use this cup of tea to tell you one thing: Learning Chinese is just like brewing tea. I'll speak very slowly, so you can listen and learn at the same time.
First, take a look at these tea leaves. They're dry and tiny, with no flavor at all. Just like when we first start learning Chinese — we can't understand anything we hear, and can't remember a single word. Don't worry — at the start, everyone is like this.
Every kind of tea is different. Some teas are ready after just a short steep; some teas take a long wait. Chinese is the same — some words are easy, and some words are hard. For the hard words, just give them a little more time — don't rush.
Okay, first I put a little tea into the cup, then pour in hot water. The moment the water goes in, the leaves slowly move in it, slowly opening up. Look — it's like they've woken up.
Now I have to do the hardest thing: wait. Good tea takes time; the more you rush, the worse it tastes. Learning Chinese is the same — you have to give yourself some time.
The first steep is pale in color and light in taste. You might think: this tea isn't very good. But don't rush to pour it out — the good flavor is still to come.
Also, don't compare yourself to others. Everyone's tea is their own. Some people are fast, some are slow — that's okay. Just watch your own tea and steep it slowly; that's all.
I pour in hot water again, and wait a little more. The second time, the third time, the tea's flavor slowly comes out, more and more fragrant. A good cup of tea is steeped many, many times.
Learning Chinese is like this too. A sentence — you hear it once, don't understand it, that's okay. Listen again, and again. Hear it enough, and slowly, you'll understand. The more times you steep, the better the flavor.
What should you listen to? Listen to what you enjoy. Just like drinking tea, drink the tea you like. When you enjoy it, you can sit down with it and listen every day. If you don't like it, you'll soon lose interest.
Okay, now this cup of tea is really ready. I pick up the cup and take a sniff. Ah, so fragrant! All that waiting was for this one sip.
Right now, listening to me speak Chinese is like drinking this cup of tea. You don't need to understand every word — you really don't. You listen, you wait, and slowly, the flavor of Chinese comes out on its own.
Sometimes you learn something, then forget it. Don't feel bad. It's like a cup of tea that has gone cold. Gone cold? No problem — add a little hot water and it's warm again, and fragrant again. Forgot a word? Just listen again, and it comes back.
I used to be so impatient learning English. I wanted to speak right away, to understand right away. But the more I rushed, the less I learned, and the worse I felt.
Later, I stopped rushing. Like brewing tea, every day I listened slowly, and learned slowly. A little today, a little tomorrow. And just like that, my English slowly got better.
Now, I really enjoy learning slowly like this. Learning a little Chinese each day is like brewing a cup of tea each day. It's a small thing, and also a very happy thing.
Learning Chinese isn't about who's fastest. It's about who can keep going. People who go too fast often get tired quickly, and give up. People who go slowly can keep going all the way.
So don't rush — take it slow. Have a cup of tea today, and another tomorrow. Listen for ten minutes today, ten more tomorrow. Do this every day, and that's wonderful.
And remember, you're not alone. Right now, many people, just like you, are slowly steeping their own tea and slowly learning Chinese. I'm still learning English too. Let's take it slow, together.
When you're tired, take a little rest. Have a sip of tea, look out the window. Once you've rested, come back. Learning Chinese doesn't need much in one day — just every day, a little at a time.
Can you understand me right now? Maybe not everything yet — that's okay, truly okay. You're listening, and that's already great. You're already on your way.
Remember: learning Chinese is like brewing a good cup of tea — slow down, wait a bit, steep it a few more times, and the good flavor will come out on its own.
Alright, my tea isn't too hot now, so I'm going to drink it. Thank you for slowly brewing a cup of tea with me. Learn slowly, don't rush, and I'll see you next time!
