On a summer night, do you know where I love to go most? Not the mall, not the movies — the night market!
I'm Xiao Yue. Tonight, I'm taking you somewhere really fun — let's stroll a Chinese night market together. I'll speak very slowly, so you can listen and learn Chinese at the same time.
A night market is a market at night. It's not there in the day — it only comes out after dark. There's lots of tasty food, lots of fun things, and lots of people — it's super lively.
It's seven thirty in the evening, and it's not hot outside anymore. I get changed and head out. The night market isn't far from home — just a ten-minute walk.
Before I even get there, I can see it. Up ahead there are so many lights, yellow and red — so pretty. And so many people, everyone laughing, everyone chatting.
Both sides of the street are lined with little stalls. Some sell food, some sell drinks, and some sell clothes and little toys. I want to see them all!
Just then, I smell something amazing — barbecue skewers! I walk over and say to the owner: Boss, three lamb skewers, please!
The skewers are ready in no time, nice and hot. I take a bite — ah, so good! Summer nights are made for this.
After the skewers, I'm a little thirsty. Next to it there's a little stall selling watermelon juice. A great big cup, only eight yuan. Sweet and ice-cold — so refreshing!
As I keep walking, I spot my favorite thing ever — tanghulu! Bright red fruits, one after another, like little lanterns — they look amazing.
I used to run a dessert shop, so sweet things are my favorite. Tanghulu is sweet on the outside, and the fruit inside is a little sour — sweet and tangy, so delicious!
Up ahead, people are playing a game called ring toss. Ten yuan a turn, and whatever your ring lands on, you get to take home. I want to play too!
I play one round and don't land a single one, haha. That's okay — fun is what counts. The little kid next to me lands a tiny toy duck and jumps up with joy.
Just then, I smell something really strange. It stinks! What is that? Oh, it's stinky tofu.
Lots of people say stinky tofu smells terrible but tastes amazing. I buy a portion and try a bite — it really is delicious! What about you? Would you like to try it?
Full and happy, I find a spot to sit down, slowly sipping my watermelon juice, watching the people come and go. Everyone's holding something tasty, with smiles on every face.
On summer nights, the breeze blows soft and slow — it feels wonderful. I really love nights like this — simple, but so happy.
It's nine thirty, and I slowly walk home. I look back — the night market is still glowing, still buzzing.
Alright, that's it for tonight's night market stroll. If you ever come to China, you have to visit a night market at night. China at night is so much fun! See you next time!
